Theoretical Anxiety and Design Strategies in the Work of Eight Contemporary Architects

Review
"Moneo's insights and analyses are often brilliant, and his perspective as a Spaniard and as a former chair of the GSD (Harvard Graduate School of Design) is a unique one. He conveys his ideas in lively prose, peppered with anecdotes." -- Architectural Record
"Theoretical Anxiety and Architectural Strategies in the Work of Eight Contemporary Architects... keeps the "live" feel of a master performance. The result is an exacting but easy read that unfolds like a novel by Italo Calvino. ... Moneo moves beyond the common denominator of form to touch on the rich complexity of what architecture is. In the sense that architecture is between the lines, you have to read between the lines of this book." -- Bernard Tschumi, The Architect’s Newspaper

Book Description
This richly illustrated book examines the houses designed by Alvaro Siza, one of the masters of contemporary architecture. The 28 villas represent an important aspect of Siza's career, where his distinctive ideas on home design translate into a wider conversation on living today and modern architecture.

Each construction is narrated by Alvaro Siza through his short poetic writings, a technical description, and a series of sketches. Also included are accounts written by Siza's clients, which bear witness to the complex dialogue behind the design of each house. The volume also features two visual essays based on a selection of drawings by Siza and impeccable photographs of his work.

Alvaro Siza is one of today's greatest living architects and the father of the new architectural minimalism. This book will...

City Magazine, June 2003
"...this is the essential digest on the work of this great maestro."

Book Description
Mexican architect Luis Barragan (1902-88) was one of the twentieth century’s most creative designers and one of its best-known architects. Self-taught, he achieved international renown for his remarkable personal artistic vision. Using vegetation, water, primary geometric forms, and vivid colors, Barragan created a poetic and painterly yet elegantly simple architectural style that transformed the Mexican building tradition into an abstract architectural language.
This revised edition of our best-selling monograph – the first comprehensive compilation of Barragan’s work (102 buildings and 12 additional projects) – contains new photographs and an updated...
