The topic is timely. The editors are highly qualified, and the authors make an impressive list. The book could be intellectually important. all in all, I think it's a very good bet.

Holidays on Ice

Book Review
Holidays on Ice is a collection of three previously published stories matched with three newer ones, all, of course, on a Christmas theme. David Sedaris's darkly playful humor is another common thread through the book, worming its way through "Seasons Greetings to Our Friends and Family!!!" a chipper suburban Christmas letter that spirals dizzily out of control, and "Front Row Center with Thaddeus Bristol," a vicious theatrical review of children's Christmas pageants. As always, Sedaris's best work is his sharply observed nonfiction, notably in "Dinah, the Christmas Whore," the tale of a memorable Christmas during which the young Sedaris learns to see his family in a new light. Worth the price of the book alone is the hilarious "SantaLand Diaries," Sedaris's chronicle of his time working as an elf at Macy's, covering...

50 Greatest Love Letters of All Time
David H. Lowenherz

From Publishers Weekly
"The act of writing," proposes Lowenherz, "gives us a chance to reflect in private before exposing our heart." Hence the value of the love letter as an abiding expression of the writer's feelings in all their depth and complexity. A prominent collector and dealer in letters and historical memorabilia, Lowenherz presents letters (or fragments thereof) that collectively express the full range of amorous passion, from blind adoration to angst-ridden vituperation. Included are the romantic outpourings of celebrated writers George Sand, Virginia Woolf, Ernest Hemingway, Zelda and F. Scott Fitzgerald whose literary talents make their correspondence a model for any aspiring lover. Perhaps less gifted in their command of language, but certainly no less heartfelt, are selections from such notables as Harry Truman, Abigail...

This book considers the important issue of "normality" and "atypicality" in child development. It examines some of the main circumstances of atypical development from a psychological perspective. Possible explanations of the "hows and whys" of atypical development are discussed in relation to recent research findings relating to intervention and the practical implications for the family.

From Library Journal
Initially published in England, this first volume in a proposed trilogy concerning the last years of Napoleon I's reign is a meticulously detailed account of the Battle of Waterloo that sets right some of the errors and omissions of fact committed by earlier contemporary authors. These center on the roles played by Britain's allies in the campaign, such as the Dutch and Belgian troops, which have been largely ignored or downplayed since the 1840s. By using original narratives, both allied and French, the author, a British Napoleonic researcher, has produced an objective battle history revealing the crucial mistakes and successful actions of all participants. He also reveals the disharmony between the British and Prussian commanders and the duplicity of the British government with regards to the Bourbon restoration...

David Copperfield: A Norton Critical Edition
Charles Dickens

Book Review
Beginning in 1854 up through to his death in 1870, Charles Dickens abridged and adapted many of his more popular works and performed them as staged readings. This version, each page illustrated with lovely watercolor paintings, is a beautiful example of one of these adaptations.

Because it is quite seriously abridged, the story concentrates primarily on the extended family of Mr. Peggotty: his orphaned nephew, Ham; his adopted niece, Little Emily; and Mrs. Gummidge, self-described as "a lone lorn creetur and everythink went contrairy with her." When Little Emily runs away with Copperfield's former schoolmate, leaving Mr. Peggotty completely brokenhearted, the whole family is thrown into turmoil. But Dickens weaves some comic relief throughout the story with the introduction of Mr. and Mrs. Micawber, and David's love for...
