From the Publisher
In 1957 Yves Klein took out a patent on a certain blue, an intense brilliant ultramarine which he called International Klein Blue (IKB). His apparently identical monochrome paintings were made with sponges or rollers or, in a series known as Anthropometries, with what he called 'living brushes'-models soaked in blue paint who pressed themselves against sheets of paper. Klein was a major figure in the French Nouveaux Ralistes group and had a profound influence on contemporary art, in particular Conceptual art, Body art, happenings and performance--a 1960 photograph, Leap into the Void, shows Klein apparently jumping head first...

Book Description
Yves Klein was regarded as a visionary even by his contemporaries. An enfant terrible and outstanding judo enthusiast whose spectacular performances attracted considerable attention in the art world, Klein created a following that only intensified in the wake of his premature death. Having anticipated numerous movements such as Happenings, Performance, Land and Body Art, and Conceptual Art, Klein's manifold oeuvre, realized within a period of only eight years, continues to exercise a decisive influence to this day. This comprehensive retrospective, presented by the Schirn Kunsthalle gallery in Frankfurt, includes over 100 works representing Klein's entire career from his first monochromes in orange, yellow, green, pink, black, and white, to his famous Klein blue monochromes, his sponge relief sculptures, his...

Yves Klein: Fire at the Heart of the Void

Book Description
"The aim of this book," Restany begins, "is to situate Fire in Yves Klein's work from the triple perspectives of mythic projection, ritual symbology, and artistic practice." No one embraced color more radically than the French conceptual artist and "painter of the Void" Yves Klein (1928–1962) who, by leaping into the empty space of his blue monochromes, broke with every tradition of painting in ways that have yet to be fully appreciated. Inspired by his study of the Japanese Kata (the abstract movements in Judo), Rosicrucian cosmogony, alchemy, and mysticism, and the phenomenological and structuralist philosophies that emerged during his lifetime (particularly the writings of Gaston Bachelard), Fire became central to Klein's quest for the Immaterial.

Book Description
Yves Klein: Air Architecture is not about Leap Into the Void, the 1960 photograph of Yves Klein diving out the second story of a building. Rather, it presents the architectural projects and theories of the French conceptual artist in the context of current tendencies toward immateriality in architecture, design, and art. This volume includes reproductions of drawings and other works from the Yves Klein Archive in Paris, as well as essays offering both historical and contemporary perspectives on the artist's work. This will be the first publication and accompanying exhibition focused solely on this body of Klein's work. Also included are the first English translation of Klein's lecture at the Sorbonne in 1959, along with related writings. Essays articulate the importance of Klein's work on the subject of immateriality...

Book Description
Ephemeral and monumental, the work of Cai Guo-Qiang is founded upon an ancient religious and philosophical aesthetic tradition. Borrowing elements from Chinese culture, the artist also makes reference to Western art in the wake of Joseph Beuys, Yves Klein, and the Arte Povera artists. Seeking a working method that would bring him a "feeling of freedom," Cai Guo-Qiang experimented with various materials, and in 1989 he unveiled a series of drawings created with gunpowder. These drawings, entitled Projects for Extraterrestrials, are among the works published in this book, which accompanies an exhibition at the Fondation Cartier. Also included are the artist's sketchbooks, presented here for the first time. Distributed on behalf of the Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain. 80 color illustrations.

From Publishers Weekly
Igniting as an arts avant-garde in the 1950s and exploding as politically revolutionary at the heart of the Paris 1968 uprisings, the Situationist International has proved a tenaciously compelling radical movement in terms of asthetics and political theory. The MIT anthology, which includes both hard-to-find original material along with critical essays focused on central figure Debord, is ambitious and exciting, focusing on the group members' significance as political and urban theorists, refusing to let them be written off as idiosyncratic heirs of dada and surrealist art-as-provocation. The argument is persuasive, though the critical essays devoted to their art (like a lengthy amble through Debord's several films) aren't nearly as riveting as the group's manifestos, musings and collective position...

Book Description
Photography has become an increasingly pervasive medium of choice in contemporary art practice and is even employed at times by artists who do not necessarily consider themselves to be photographers. How did this come to be? The Last Picture Show will address the emergence of this phenomenon of artists using photography by tracing the development of conceptual trends in postwar photographic practice from its first glimmerings in the 60s in the work of artists such as Bernd & Hilla Becher, Ed Ruscha and Bruce Nauman, to its rise to art-world prominence in the work of the artists of the late 70s and early 80s including Sherrie Levine, Richard Prince and Cindy Sherman. Intended as a major genealogy of the rise of a still-powerful and evolving photographic practice by artists, the checklist will include a wide array of...
