From Library Journal
While most considerations of early Renaissance art focus on the significance of the Florentine contribution, Pisanello's (c. 1394-1455) contemporary fame and extraordinary achievement makes clear to us the inadequacy and narrowness of that perspective. Although intended to complement an exhibition at the National Gallery of Art, London, this scholarly but nonetheless accessible volume is, in fact, the best and most comprehensive study of the artist that exists in English. Handsomely produced and splendidly illustrated, it grapples insightfully with the full range of the master's activity as painter, draughtsman, and metallurgist. His works are tellingly evoked and iconographically unraveled, and their interconnections and sources are subtly exposed. Of particular import, the authors (both curators, Syson at the...

From Library Journal
This exhibition catalog reproduces 104 drawings selected from one of the most important drawings collections in the world in full size whenever possible and in color. Ranging from the Italian Renaissance through the Dutch and Flemish Baroque to the 19th-century French masters, the works here are superbly reproduced, making this volume difficult to set aside. Following an introduction describing the history of the museum, each drawing is presented with physical description, provenance, exhibitions, bibliography, comparative illustrations, and a text that discusses the artist's technique, subject matter, history of the work, problems of attribution, and other points of interest. Some of the drawings are previously unexhibited or unpublished. This is for both general readers and scholars; an important addition for all...

Book Description
"This book is the first attempt fully to gauge Pisanello's significance as an artist, and it is remarkably successful in doing this. It brings one closer than any earlier publication to the climate of fifteenth-century court art and to the creative intentions of a great court artist." --Sir John Pope-Hennessy, Professor Emeritus, Institute of Fine Arts "This is certainly one of the most impressive contributions I have seen to the interpretation of courtly cultures in the Renaissance, and it is beyond a doubt one of the most important works on Mantua done in this century. What is more, it is interesting and original in so many ways, and manages at the same time to be so erudite and so lively, that it immediately establishes the author as one of a tiny group of scholars who really do make history and art history work...
