Book Review
The arts community of Paris in the late 19th century has been gutted, stuffed, studied, and fetishized for so many years now that one could easily think there are no mysteries left to wring from this era, as exceptional as it was. This handsome title focuses on the relationship between the ribald, booming, bohemian neighborhood of Montmartre and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec's work(1864-1901). It places his art so squarely in context that it rushes back to life and relevance. This is no mean feat, and the picture depicted in these four scholarly and engrossing essays is much clearer, stranger, and more sordid than Hollywood’s botched tribute. As discussed in Phillip Dennis Cate's essay, all manner of artists commingled in Lautrec’s dens of exploitation (circuses, dancing halls and whorehouses): Nabis, Symbolist, and...

From Library Journal
This catalog accompanies an exhibition of French artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901) at the Basil and Elise Goulandris Contemporary Art Foundation in Andros, Greece. Published in the centenary year of Toulouse-Lautrec's death (2001), this volume examines images of women in his art, as they were his favorite artistic subject. Toulouse-Lautrec scholars Gotz Adriani and Daniele Deynck also underline the dignity and lack of judgment that the artist brings to his renderings of prostitutes in brothels. The innovation of his flat, stylized forms and the modernity of the subjects of the theater and cabaret are also mentioned. Despite high-quality color reproductions, catalog entries on each exhibited artwork, and a photograph-filled chronology, this book is thin on scholarly information. Considering...

From School Library Journal
Grade 4-8–This short, vividly illustrated book is an excellent addition to the recent spate of artist biographies such as Jonah Winter's Frida(Scholastic, 2002), James Warhola's Uncle Andy's(Putnam, 2003), Michael Garland's Dinner at Magritte's(Penguin, 1995), and M. T. Anderson's Strange Mr. Satie (Viking, 2003). These excellent art-history primers afford respect and offer historical perspective to subjects who were misunderstood during their own lifetimes. This biography is no different. Burleigh confidently celebrates Lautrec's work and skill and allows readers to shake hands with the man as a great artist rather than as a fixture in Parisian nightlife. Not only does the book feature Lautrec's paintings in many mediums (watercolors, drawings, oil paintings, graphite), but it also includes large,...
