Book Review
Gary Larson calls The Complete Far Side, the massive two-volume collection of his Far Side cartoons, an "18-pound hernia giver." Sure to give any coffee table a solid workout, the handsome and heavy 1,272-page "legacy book" is a must for fervent fans; over 4,300 single-panel comics with more than half in color and 1,100 that have not appeared in any book form before (the popular--and far less weighty--paperback collections).

Set in rough chronological order, the comics share pages with occasional letters from fans, detractors, editors, folks made famous by a particular cartoon, and those begging for explanations. Though few explanations are provided (Larson personally supplies merely one, plus a single apology), this collection helps answer the inevitable "how do you think up these things" conundrum. Before each year's...

From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 5-The photos stand alone in this textless mathematics book. Four small, labeled diagrams on the back of the title page define the shapes. After that, readers are led on a treasure hunt for those shapes through 21 crisp, colorful pictures. A display of teddy bears in clown hats, a basket of baseballs, a breathtaking castle, and sculptured hedges typify the broad-ranging subject matter. Math teachers approaching solid geometry will find this to be a useful resource. Carved out, at the close of the eighteenth century, of some of the thickest woods and foulest swamps north of Georgia, the glorious city of Washington D.C., is among America's most stately, most beautiful, and most impressive. Indeed, once maligned by Charles Dickens as simply "spacious avenues that begin in nothing and lead nowhere; streets a mile long that only want houses, roads, and inhabitants; public buildings that need but a public to be complete, " Washington, D.C. today is a powerful symbol not only of our nation but of democracy.
Spanning the Potomac in majestic fashion, the city fans out gracefully, offering a multitude of pleasures to the more than twenty million tourists who visit annually. From official Washington (the imposing Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials, the White House, the Capitol,...

*Starred Review* Even the most avid readers of travel guides and travel literature will not have encountered a book quite like this one. It is huge and heavy but reasonably priced, and it is vastly informative, which is its calling card. All the writers who contribute to the Lonely Planet travel guide series have put heads, knowledge, and experience together and come up with an A-Z series of capsule profiles of every country in the world, 230 in number. Each country gets a two-page spread, on which are placed, like luscious dishes set before one at a feast, illustrations that are typical of Lonely Planet's unique, non-picture-postcard brand of shots. Book Review
It's an inspired idea--to better understand the human diet, explore what culturally diverse families eat for a week. That's what photographer Peter Menzel and author-journalist Faith D'Alusio, authors of the equally ambitious Material World, do in Hungry Planet: What the World Eats, a comparative photo-chronicle of their visits to 30 families in 24 countries for 600 meals in all. Their personal-is-political portraits feature pictures of each family with a week's worth of food purchases; weekly food-intake lists with costs noted; typical family recipes; and illuminating essays, such as "Diabesity," on the growing threat of obesity and diabetes. Among the families, we meet the Mellanders, a German household of five who enjoy cinnamon rolls, chocolate croissants, and beef roulades, and whose weekly food...

Miracle
Anne Geddes

October 2004

From Publishers Weekly
Geddes's photographs of newborns poised on flowers and within sheer, stockinglike sacs have sold more than 15 million books in more than 50 countries; Dion's multi-octave vocal stylings are unmistakable, from the Titanic soundtrack and far beyond. Dion's attempts and eventual success in having a child were well documented on the supermarket racks; Geddes's success has been the stuff of magazine features for years. Thus this 11" × 13" collaboration has something of an inevitable feel to it, sharing its title with Dion's album of lullabies and apostrophes to children (such as John Lennon's "Beautiful Boy"). The book itself contains more than 100 new full-color Geddes photos, a number of which feature Dion (but not her son, Rene Charles, who was born in 2001 and is thus about a thousand days too old for the...
