Paperback
·

From Library Journal
Kullberg is a born artist, self-taught and highly accomplished. In her first book, she proves to be a born teacher as well. She thoroughly and engagingly explores the details of the tools and techniques necessary for every element of creating portraits. Colored pencil is a medium that requires little money, no setup, no cleanup, and no health concernsAjust as much hard work and talent as any other medium. With her fresh enthusiasm, Kullberg makes the work a pleasure. Collections that have Lee Hammond's similar Drawing Portraits in Colored Pencil from Photographs (North Light, 1997) may want to add this as well. In choosing between the two, Kullberg's personal approach edges out Hammond.Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Capturing Soft Realism in Colored Pencil
Ann Kullberg

August 2002

From Library Journal
An accomplished portrait artist and author, Kullberg begins her book in a defensive tone. Why, she asks, write a book about the details of hedges, apple blossoms, striped couches, and keyholes-the things that fill in the background and foreground of portraits? It's clear, though, that any artist will advance his or her colored pencil technique immeasurably through this book. The use of reference photos, demonstrations of feathering vs. definite strokes and the dense vs. airy approach, and excellent "Frequently Asked Questions" boxes all make for a significant contribution to the teaching of this style of drawing. This is a fine advance for students who have mastered Bet Borgeson's Basic Colored Pencil Techniques. Copyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
A relatively unknown medium, watercolor pencils are a portable, versatile alternative to the traditional watercolor kit. Generally made of pure pigment in a water-soluble wax base enclosed in a wooden pencil, they are used dry for sketching but when moistened easily create washes and multiple layers of color. Johnson is a prolific author and artist with 25 books to her credit, including Sketching and Drawing. Here, she introduces this unique medium with simple mini-demos on the basics and fully developed compositions of landscapes, flowers, bridges, and buildings. Large collections will want to add this, though small libraries may want a more general book that includes a section on watercolor pencils, such as Janie Gildow and Barbara Newton's Colored Pencil Solution Book. Drawing in Color Animals

From Library Journal
Having trouble keeping your ferret still for a portrait? Here are three books for capturing small critters, Hammond's in colored pencils, Scott's in paints, and Wynne's in both. Hammond is a highly accomplished artist with several North Light books to her credit. Here she has developed a special graphing system for beginners, primarily for drawing cats, dogs, horses, and squirrels but for a few bears and tigers, too. It's an excellent system for those intimidated by the variations of eyes, mouths, ears, and feet found on our furry companions. Scott's approach is for the advanced student who wants a more classically based style for painting rabbits, ferrets, mice, raccoons, and foxes. The influence of the Old Masters can be detected in her 41 mini-demonstrations and 16 full treatments in oil, acrylic, ...

I'm a Manatee (Book and CD)
John Lithgow

August 2003
Hardcover

Book Review
Not blessed with the adorable good looks of a koala, the mythic mystery of a dinosaur, or even the useful familiarity of a dog, the manatee is an infrequent hero in the world of children's literature. It doesn't help matters that the poor thing has a name that's so difficult to rhyme. But the unnamed hero of John Lithgow and Ard Hoyt's I'm a Manatee (really, a boy dreaming he is a manatee) sees plenty of upside to the life of the animal that's been indelicately nicknamed the "cow of the sea." And when rhymes are unavailable to state his case, he simply makes some up: "Encumbered by my lumbering gigan-atee,/ I'm thought to be an ocean-going brute!/ The least appealing creature on the planet-ee,/ But to a manatee, I'm cute!" The words in the book are the same as the lyrics in the song version of I'm a Manatee, which is...

From School Library Journal
YA-- Unlike previously published books on the subject, this one goes beyond the author's own style to expose readers to a variety of approaches through discussion and hundreds of illustrations. Chapter topics incorporate the usual information--tools, paper, preliminary sketches, and basic techniques--as well as some useful additions, such as setting up the studio space, color and its impact, and professional tips. Advanced techniques include portraits, textures, and landscapes. Poulin's discussion of how to draw from a photo or slide should be required reading for students who want to develop their skills without becoming dependent on photographs. Best of all, he includes examples of the medium by a variety of artists who approach their subjects in personal ways. The identifying paragraph for each picture...
