The Encyclopedia of Pastel Techniques: A Comprehensive Visual Guide to Traditional and Contemporary Techniques
Judy Martin
1402709110
October 2003
Paperback
·

From Library Journal
This outstanding volume on pastel techniques lives up to the encyclopedic claims of its title in a most delightful way. The book introduces soft, hard, oil, and water-soluble pastels, plus pastel pencils. The first section contains more than 40 demonstrations of techniques, from pouncing to scumbling. In addition, Martin explores pastel in combination with several other media, including acrylics and watercolors. With so few good books available on the subject, most libraries should consider both this and Guy Roddon's Pastel Painting Techniques ( LJ 8/91).- Daniel J. You Can Paint Pastels: A Step-by-Step Guide for Absolute Beginners
Marie Blake
0823059901
October 2000
Paperback
·

From Library Journal
I worry when I see books claiming categorically that everyone can be taught to paint. These two books confidently insist that the "absolute" beginner can produce pastels and watercolors in no time. In Blake's attempt to prove this, she sensibly points out that pastels can be seen as crayons for adults no messy oils, tubes, and brushes to deal with. She takes the student from simple marks on a page through tone, perspective, and so forth to simple still lifes, landscapes, and figures. Despite initial doubts, Blake does deliver in this volume, and for those on a budget, it's less than half the price of Jackie Simmonds's more comprehensive Pastel Workbook: A Complete Course in Ten Lessons (LJ 11/15/99). With an identical format and purpose, Crawshaw takes on watercolor for the beginner. Starting with a basic flat...

From Library Journal
This fine book covers color theory for beginners. Sidaway (The Instant Artist) offers brief sections on the science of color, theory, and pigments, plus numerous color-mixing charts in oils, acrylics, watercolors, gouache, soft pastels, pencils, and inks. Stephen Quiller's book Color Choices: Making Color Sense Out of Color Theory, originally published in cloth in 1989 and now out in paperback, is for the advanced artist who wants to experiment with glazing methods or study the color theory of Rembrandt, Turner, Vermeer, Hopper, O'Keeffe, and John Henry Twachtman. This inspiring, creative approach to color could well be supplemented by David Pyle's What Every Artist Needs To Know About Paints & Colors, which covers vital health and safety issues and the use of color in computer graphics. From Publishers Weekly
Like most hormone-saturated boys his age, 16-year-old Mugi Tadano is obsessed with sex but timid about the prospect of actually "doing it." When he catches sight of lovely Yuu Tsukisaki changing into her bikini, he's both flustered and fascinated. He falls in puppy love/lust. Mugi's emotional turmoil intensifies when he goes home and discovers that Yuu and her smart-mouthed sister will be living there from now on. Then Mugi and Yuu are left alone in the house at night. Then they wind up sleeping in the same bed. Then she rolls over in her sleep and hugs him. And so on. Everything that happens is innocent but intensely titillating. As he gets to know her, Mugi's feelings for Yuu deepen; she really is a sweet person. At the same time, he's getting incredibly horny. He doesn't want to behave like the irresponsible...

Every twentieth-century society name, from Coco Chanel to Babe Paley, is mentioned at least once in this meticulous biography of Sicilian jeweler Fulco Santostefano della Cerda, duke of Verdura. Book Description
William Spratling revolutionized silver jewelry design in Mexico. Arriving in Taxco in 1929, by 1940 he had over 100 silversmiths producing his enormously popular silver creations. Important figures of the North American literary and art establishment, among them John dos Passos, William Faulkner, and Georgia O'Keeffe, purchased his designs and sang his praises. Out of Spratling's workshop emerged many of Mexico's finest silver designers, including Héctor Aguilar, Antonio Castillo and his brothers Jorge and Justo, Salvador Terán, and Antonio Pineda. Today their striking jewelry and hollowware in silver-often set with precious stones and pre-Columbian artifacts-are prized collectibles. This book tells the story of the legendary designer and of seven decades of the silversmith's art in Mexico. With its elegant...
