You Can Paint Watercolors: A Step-by-Step Guide for Absolute Beginners
Alwyn Cranshaw

October 2000
Paperback

From Library Journal
I worry when I see books claiming categorically that everyone can be taught to paint. These two books confidently insist that the "absolute" beginner can produce pastels and watercolors in no time. In Blake's attempt to prove this, she sensibly points out that pastels can be seen as crayons for adults no messy oils, tubes, and brushes to deal with. She takes the student from simple marks on a page through tone, perspective, and so forth to simple still lifes, landscapes, and figures. Despite initial doubts, Blake does deliver in this volume, and for those on a budget, it's less than half the price of Jackie Simmonds's more comprehensive Pastel Workbook: A Complete Course in Ten Lessons (LJ 11/15/99). With an identical format and purpose, Crawshaw takes on watercolor for the beginner. Starting with a basic flat...

Watercolor Basics: Let's Get Started (Watercolor Basics)

From Library Journal
One might reasonably ask, "Why another basic watercolor book in an already packed market?" Simply put, most books fall far short?the beginner's book is perhaps the most difficult to write. Reid has taught more than 10,000 students during his distinguished career and has a unique understanding of how to transmit his knowledge. He neither assumes too much nor condescends. This is among a few such books?Mary Whyte's Watercolor for the Serious Beginner (Watson-Guptill, 1997) is another?that can be highly recommended.Copyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
The Picasso Project, with the approval of the Picasso estate, is producing a chronological black-and-white photographic catalog of the artist's works. Directed by Picasso scholar Chipp until his recent death, the project promises to consolidate and authenticate all the paintings, watercolors, drawings, and sculpture produced from 1885 to 1973 in a gradually released series. Being made available in 1995 and 1996, the first nine volumes trace the period on which the least has been published: Picasso's post-Cubist years from 1917 to 1949. Until now the catalog used most frequently has been the one Christian Zervos began in the 1930s. While this catalog added supplements to its original core as new works by Picasso were documented, the Picasso Project benefits from its chronological arrangement; grouping the works...
