John Grierson (1898-1972) was a Scotsman who created the National Film Board of Canada (NFB). First to use the word documentary in relation to film, he founded the documentary film movement in Britain. Prime Minister Mackenzie King invited Grierson to Canada and in 1939 appointed him first commissioner of the NFB. During the Second World War, Grierson supervised the distribution of wartime information. After the war, he was accused of being a communist and was brought before a secret tribunal. He left Canada, but returned many years later to teach at McGill University. Although Grierson worked in Canada only a short time, he left a profound legacy.
