Written Lives

From Publishers Weekly
The writers whose lives are sketched in this quirky and appealing book by the world-renowned (though less so here) Spanish writer Marías are familiar to any avid reader: Oscar Wilde, Henry James, Djuna Barnes and William Faulkner, among others. Marias says his aim is to examine writers about whom "absolutely everything" is already known and portray them "as if they were fictional characters." He distills each writer's salient personality traits to outline definitive if idiosyncratic portraits: thus "Nabokov in Rapture"; "Ivan Turgenev in His Sadness." Almost all of these essays display Marías 's dry humor and affectionate tolerance for his subjects' eccentricities, but the portrayals of Thomas Mann, James Joyce and Yukio Mishima bristle with Marías 's disdain. And sometimes the title phrase...

From Publishers Weekly
Parenting literature is rife with specialization, and all-encompassing guides are often too general to be helpful; this new book from Children's Hospital Boston is an admirable exception. Assembled by a highly credentialed team of Harvard educators, with input from over 75 members of the hospital's staff, and presented in a friendly, matter-of-fact style with simple but helpful illustrations, it is a veritable encyclopedia on current developmental theory, medical recommendations and diverse parenting ideas, divided into five major sections: Setting the Stage discusses preparing for birth and postdelivery procedures; Your Child Age-by-Age includes five detailed chapters covering development, behavior, safety and parenting for newborns through school-age kids; Getting Help elucidates selecting and working with a...

The Letters of D. H. Lawrence: Volume 6, March 1927-November 1928

From Library Journal
Lawrence wrote the 763 letters in this volume in the last 15 months of his life. Most of the letters are previously unpublished; many more are available only in incomplete texts. A large number concern "business," and Lawrence's poor health noticeably saps his energy. The letters are also shadowed by Lawrence's growing awareness that he would die before reaching his 45th birthday. Still, the characteristic Lawrentian spirit is here in abundance. The letters are masterfully but unobtrusively edited by Sagar and Boulton, two English academics. It's fair to say that they know more about Lawrence's life than he knew himself. Volume 8 will mainly provide a comprehensive index to the over 5500 letters of the first seven volumes. This edition of Lawrence's letters will stand as a monument of modern literary scholarship;...
