Don't Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me
Paula Begoun

Feb 2003
Paperback
·

Book Review
Women spend an extraordinary amount of money on cosmetics--$45 billion a year in the U.S. alone. Now in its fourth edition, Don't Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me strikes fear in cosmetics-counter consultants everywhere. First off, Begoun has deconstructed ingredient lists. Ever wonder what methylparaben, propylparaben, and butylparaben are doing in your mascara? And what is diazolidinyl urea? All four are potential irritants, and the latter is a preservative that can release formaldehyde, a class A carcinogen. Buyer beware.

Begoun also lists which companies are cruelty-free and which continue to conduct animal testing. The majority of the book--and that's nearly 800 pages--is devoted to reviews of thousands of cosmetics, from cleansers, foundations, alpha-hydroxy acids, and moisturizers to lip liners, eye shadows,...

From Publishers Weekly
Discovered when she was a university student in Nairobi, Kenya, in 1975 by photographer Peter Beard, Iman went on to become an international supermodel. To address the needs of women of color, she launched a line of cosmetics, Iman, in 1994, and with this beautifully illustrated coffee-table book geared to black, Hispanic, Middle Eastern and Asian women, and timed to coincide with the debut of her second cosmetic line, she's poised to become the voice of beauty for this underrepresented group of women. In a conversational tone, Iman shares solutions to basic makeup and skin care quandaries (how to use blush, test foundation and choose tools) and debunks myths (dark skinned women don't need sunblock, ethnicity determines skin color). Other sections show how to "get the look" from "Ghetto Fab" to "So Fresh So...

Baby Skin

From Library Journal
Novick, a professor of dermatology, divides this book into two sections. In "Basic Care," he addresses techniques and products for bathing a baby, including soaps, shampoos, diapers, powders, and lotions. In "Skin Problems," Novick focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of such skin diseases as rashes, eczemas, birthmarks, and other abnormalities. Comments on black skin are interspersed throughout the book. While Novick's explanations are clear and he avoids unnecessary technicality, he repeats some information found in his previous (and much better) books, Saving Face (Watts, 1986) and Super Skin ( LJ 10/15/88). Since specific products are mentioned, an appendix listing the products would have been helpful; the lack of illustrations is a major flaw. Not recommended for first purchase.- Catherine Greene, Bethesda...
