Calling in "The One": 7 Weeks to Attract the Love of Your Life
Katherine Woodward Thomas

From Publishers Weekly
Psychotherapist Thomas's warm-hearted "course" for the lovelorn focuses on internal change rather than a quest for "the One," because, she says, "There is a huge chasm between wanting to find your ideal partner and being truly available... when he or she appears." Each of the seven weeks centers on a theme, including preparing to let love into one's life, letting go of childhood wounds and loving oneself. Thomas reinforces her lessons with standard self-help techniques, particularly meditation and journaling. Her feel-good-about-yourself message gets much of its thrust from a Christian perspective, though a healthy dose of Buddhism and Eastern religious traditions spices things up. Atheists should be able to navigate the course as effectively as believers, she says, though her many references to God's role in...

Jane Austen, or The Secret of Style

Review
Joseph Litvak, "Novel" : In addition to being an essential book on Austen, this is the smartest, not to mention the most stylish, discussion of style there is. Miller approaches this forbiddingly elusive concept and beautifully captures its weirdness and its emotional complexity. This book has a heart, as well as an art, to go with its brains.
Kate Flint, "Studies in English Literature, 1500-1900" : D. A. Miller's exquisite, original, meditative, and provocative volume [is] written in a style that is like a collision between Austen herself and the more epigrammatic modes of Roland Barthes. . . . Miller is continually provocative, but in an allusive, highly crafted-stylish-way: writing which is the product of deep immersion in Austen's fiction and its affect.

The Merriam-Webster Encylopedia of Literature
Comic novel by Mario Vargas Llosa, published as La tia Julia y el escribidor in 1977. Vargas Llosa uses counterpoint, paradox, and satire to explore the creative process of writing and its relation to the daily lives of writers. One half of the story is an autobiographical account of an aspiring writer named Marito Varguitas, who falls in love with Julia, the divorced sister-in-law of his Uncle Lucho. Marito's success at writing and romance contrasts with the fortunes of Pedro Camacho, the protagonist of the other half of the story, who is a devoted but declining author of radio soap operas.

Book Review
If you like the kind of fringe element who regularly populate the fiction of Katherine Dunn or Mike McCormack, then Daniel Mueller's How Animals Mate is the book for you. Each of these eight short stories focuses on characters who range from the tragically outcast to the downright grotesque. The protagonist in "Ice Breaking," for example, is a gay man whose AIDS-infected lover has just committed suicide by mixing it up with a train. Having collected his boyfriend's remains into a sack, Sy Johnson then proceeds to drag the dismembered corpse out onto a frozen lake where he also intends to take his own life in a way that is gruesome and effective in equal measure. Things aren't much better for the gay hero of "Zero," whose business is being driven into the ground by his sick lover's spiraling medical bills. And then there's...

Sam Washington, the beautiful but tightly wound heroine of this cute confection, is the "Queen of Control," marching along the partnership treadmill at her London law firm, her love life reduced to fending off a senior partner's advances. Unlike her friends-cheerfully promiscuous Gemma, fellow lawyer EJ, and blissfully betrothed Sophie-she has abandoned flings, commitment and getting close. Enter wild-card Ben, scruffy-sexy producer of dubious television documentaries like the lingerie-model expos-Storm in a D Cup, who finds and reads Sam's lost diary. Is Ben smitten by this glimpse into Sam's soul, or does he want to turn her embarrassing secrets into a reality show? Sigaloff (Name and Address Withheld) expertly situates this fictional imbroglio on the Bridget Jones's Diary/Sex in the City plane, as Sam endures...

Book Description
The Soul Mate Collection is expression of the intimate union between a man and woman who are so intricately woven together in heart and thought, they can only be called soul mates. The collection consists of a series of brief poems that seek to capture the coming together, the love shared, the maturing of the relationship, the heartache endured to grow closer, and the continuous efforts to keep the love everlasting.

Relationships are not easy, but when two can come together in love, openness, honesty, trust, communication, commitment, and agreement, there is no stronger union or bond, nor any greater satisfaction under Heaven.
