Book Review
Nothing's more central to the Internet than the TCP/IP protocol stack, so internetworking engineers need to know--or have access to--as much information about it as possible. That's the function of Routing TCP/IP, Volume II, an encyclopedic reference that covers pretty much every aspect of TCP/IP internetworking in deep, practical detail. This is one of the books that working experts should always have at hand, and one of the best choices for people studying for the higher-level Cisco certification examinations, especially the Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE) laboratory protocols. Jeff Doyle and Jennifer Carroll, both CCIEs, share their background knowledge and practical wisdom in nearly 1,000 information-dense, hardbound pages.

This book works well on a lot of levels, but its careful integration of...

Cisco IOS in a Nutshell (In a Nutshell)

Paperback

Book Review
Three cheers for the Nutshell format! There may be no better printed style for command-line environments, like the Internetwork Operating System (IOS) that runs on Cisco Systems routers. Cisco IOS in a Nutshell documents the most important bits of the frequently arcane IOS command line from aaa accounting to write, thereby providing a valuable resource to everyone who works with IOS. The reference section--which makes up about 60 percent of this book--summarizes each command (again, they're not all covered, but the ones that aren't are pretty obscure) with a statement of its scope (global, interface, line, or whatever), followed by generalized syntax summaries in the style of Unix man pages (these indicate the legal combinations of switches and parameters). Then, a detailed discussion of each switch and parameter clarifies...

The Network+ Study Guide explains all you need to know about computer networking to pass CompTIA's Network+ exam. The book covers the fundamentals of local area networks (LANs), the seven-layer Open Systems Interconnect (OSI) network model, and network operating systems (including NetWare, Windows NT, and to a lesser degree Unix variants). Readers will find considerable coverage of the TCP/IP protocol suite, including some of the utility programs used to configure it locally and remotely. There's also a lot of "softer" material about the duties of a network administrator, good troubleshooting practices, and the issues involved in network security. Organized to match CompTIA's stated objectives for the Network+ exam, this guide will prepare you for that test as well as Microsoft's Networking Essentials exam...

CCNA: Cisco Certified Network Associate Study Guide, Third Edition
Todd Lammle
0782141676

·

Book Review
An impressive offering, CCNA: Cisco Certified Network Associate Study Guide does a terrific job of making networking basics approachable. Though written for those already familiar with technology, it nonetheless manages to clearly explain what makes networks work without undercutting their inherent complexity. Authors Lammle and Chellis set the stage by going through such fundamentals as local area network (LAN) devices, the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model, and various data transport protocols. From there, the book delves into such topics as network congestion--what causes it and what to do about it--Internet protocol (IP) addressing and subnetting, interior routing protocols, and basic routing configuration.

As is characteristic of any quality study guide, each chapter ends with a summary followed by a mountain...

TCP/IP Bible
Rod Scrimger

December 2001
Paperback

Book Review
The TCP/IP Bible sounds like it's purely an in-depth look at Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and Internet Protocol (IP)--usually referred to collectively as TCP/IP--as well as the other protocols that traditionally make up a TCP/IP "stack." That's not really what it is. Though the authors cover the TCP/IP protocols (bit by bit in many cases), it is instead more of a general networking book, with coverage of everything from how to wire up a switch on a local area network (LAN) to where to place your servers relative to your routers. TCP/IP Bible is a good general networking book, worth its cover price for someone who's getting into the field for the first time or an experienced technician wanting to understand the protocols and their capabilities more fully.

Written by a large team of authors, this book...
