From the Inside Flap
PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION Many things have changed since the publication of the first edition of this book in 1991. At the time, we reported projections that, by 1998, centralized database managers (DBMSs) would be an \antique curiosity" and most organizations would move towards distributed database managers. Distribution was slowly starting and "client/server" had just started to enter our daily jargon. These systems were generally multiple client/single server systems in which the distribution was mostly in terms of functionality, not data. If multiple servers were used, clients were responsible for managing the connections to these servers. Thus, transparency of access was not widely supported, and each client had to "know" the location of the required data. The distribution of data among multiple servers...

Book Review
This is the one book you ought to have if you want to expand your knowledge of online transaction processing (OLTP) and learn how to apply it to the real world. Transaction Processing completely covers the problems faced by OLTP systems and discusses fault tolerance and recovery--the ability of a system to withstand failures of various kinds without dropping the ball. Additionally, Gray and Reuter cover system architecture decisions, monitoring, concurrence (including locks and isolation), scheduling (including deadlock resolution), and file systems. The book concludes with a discussion (circa 1993) of the merits of various hardware and software used in OLTP systems. Although there is no companion CD-ROM with Transaction Processing, the authors do illustrate many of the book's concepts with C source code. As this is a...

SAP R/3 Business Blueprint : Understanding the Business Process Reference Model
Thomas Curran, et al

July 28, 1997
Paperback
·

Book Review
For those interested in redefining the way in which their business does its business, SAP R/3 Business Blueprint: Understanding the Business Process Reference Model is worth a perusal. Authors Curran and Keller define their central idea--business engineering--as a method by which information technology is used to design and reengineer business processes, such as sales and distribution, instead of simply automating them. And as is clear from the title, this concept is explored almost exclusively within the context of SAP R/3.

The book is broken down into four sections: "Business Engineering," "Process Engineering," "Architecture," and "Framework & Tools." These segments follow a sliding scale that goes from MBA esoterica to practical application to behind-the-scenes implementation. The first section is dedicated to such...

Book Review
Microsoft SQL Server 2000 has become standard equipment in lots of organizations, largely owing to its relatively friendly user interface on top of its solid infrastructure. That user interface, however, can intimidate users who are new to the environment and lack the experience to interpret what they see. Microsoft SQL Server 2000 for Dummies decodes this top-of-the-line relational database management system (RDBMS) for the benefit of such novices, as well as for people coming to SQL Server 2000 from one of its competitors. Anthony Mann does a fine job of explaining not only administrative matters, but also issues of database design, Structured Query Language (SQL), and integration of SQL Server databases into larger information systems.

The instructional style in this book varies depending on the subject at hand. When...
