Playing with Trains: A Passion beyond Scale
Sam Posey
1400061784
September 2004
Hardcover
·

From Publishers Weekly
Former sportswriter and Grand Prix racer Posey captures the perennial American obsession with model railroading in this joyful combination of memoir, cultural history and love letter. Those who owned electric trains as kids will delight in Posey's retelling of his early love of Lionel trains, as well as his recounting of such details as the fact that Pope Pius XII, "in full ecclesiastical garb, posed with Lionel equipment in the Vatican." After his loyalty switches to smaller HO-scale trains, which at first seem more economical for a set he wants to build for his young son, the author soon finds himself confronting the essential truth of HO life: "people with HO layouts rarely bought their accessories, they made them." Most of the book's first half recounts the construction of Posey's 16-year masterpiece, a...

Christie's Toy Trains
Hugo Marsh, Pierce Carlson (Contributor)

November 2002
Hardcover
·

From Booklist
Train and toy expert Marsh takes a historical and aesthetic look at locomotives and accessories produced both before 1900 and after, in both the U.S and Europe. It is patently clear, from the introduction, what he favors--and why--for Hornby, Lionel, and Marklin products get the lion's share of his attention and the good color photographs. It is somewhat difficult for novices to plow through the language, studded with terms such as bogies and buffers; the appended glossary (found in the collector's information at the end) would have been better placed up front or scattered throughout the text. Nonetheless, sidebars, like "Building up a Collection" and "Conservation and Restoration," restore the reader's confidence in the power of antiques experts. Barbara Jacobs

Book Review
If you're a woman who's serious about strengthening and sculpting your physique, expert trainer Brad Schoenfeld provides a progressive program with a variety of resistance exercises for each muscle group. This second edition of Sculpting Her Body Perfect updates the 1999 book and adds new exercises, notably many that can be done at home rather than at a gym. The exercises, using free weights, machines, bands, and cables, are well illustrated with clear photographs. Personal stories and photos of female fitness competitors and body builders make it seem as though this book is aimed at women aspiring to the competitive level, although it does start with a beginner's program and progresses through the advanced level. The abdominal section still focuses on creating visually appealing abs with no mention of core conditioning...

I Knew You Could!: A Book for All the Stops in Your Life
Craig Dorfman
0448431483
March 2003
Hardcover
·

From School Library Journal
Grade 3 Up-The same little blue engine "that could" is back, with a new author and illustrator. This time it is encouraging readers to choose the track that best suits their interests and talents and forge ahead on life's journey. Dorfman suggests that though there will be "deep river valleys" and "high mountaintops," dark tunnels and uncharted territory, "I think I can" should be their clarion cry. The rhyming text often does not scan and forced rhymes such as "toured"/"aboard" are sprinkled throughout. Ong's illustrations feature pastel colors and a train that looks very much like its forebear. Children and adults of different ethnic groups and genders greet it on its route. While this is a pleasant book with a much-needed message of confidence and perseverance, that message can only be understood by older...
