Projection Stenciling

Book Review
Stencil artists extraordinaire Linda Buckingham and Leslie Bird have hit upon a truly brilliant approach to their subject that enables even novices to create high-quality, large-scale designs. Their method entails covering the paintable surface with freezer paper (adhered with stencil spray adhesive), projecting the image onto the paper using an overhead or slide projector, and tracing the design onto the paper. Each design element is then color-coded and cut out one color at a time. In effect, the usually complex process of producing wall murals is reduced to the simplicity of a paint-by-number scheme. The 40 step-by-step projects include materials lists, color codes, color photos of the finished work, and complete gridded patterns of each design, so even if you don't have access to any of the various projectors adaptable...

The Complete Stenciling Handbook

Paperback

From Booklist
How often can any author, even an expert, authoritatively assert that his or her book is the source of all knowledge on a topic? Rare as that may be, Buckingham's fourth book is, indeed, the ultimate reference for stenciling. Although she claims that mastery of this craft is fairly simple, under her tutelage, stenciling itself becomes a broad-based art, covering not only flat 2-D templates but also application to fabrics, floors, glass, and paper as well as special effects. Every chapter includes a plethora of how-to color photographs and examples, from cutting a stencil to working devore--or "burnt"--on luxurious fabrics. No patterns are included, but the samples can easily be emulated. A useful source for any level of stenciler. Barbara Jacobs

Book Review
Whether you're thinking about stenciling something simple such as a floral motif around a doorway or have set your sights on turning your bedroom into a medieval castle, this guide will help. Stenciling, we learn, comes from an old French word meaning to sparkle, and the lively projects certainly do. Beyond good coverage of all the necessary basics (equipment, fixing mistakes, cutting your own stencils) and the usual candidates for rampaging stencil artists (walls, fabrics, home decorating accessories), the book offers information on advanced techniques (like airbrushing and trompe l'oeil) and adapting the process to unusual surfaces (ceramic tiles, ceilings, exterior walls). And if you've ever dreamed of becoming a professional stenciler, the no-nonsense advice on setting prices, finding clients, and other tricks of the...

Creative Surface Design : Painting, Stamping, Stenciling, and Embossing Fabric & More
Sandy Scrivano

Paperback

From Booklist
Yes, there are other books dealing with the art of applying different techniques to surfaces, covering painting, embossing, stenciling, and stamping. Not only does California artist Scrivano combine these four most popular methods but she also employs them easily, almost painlessly, on different home and wearable items. The idea is to give readers some basics of each technique, a few critical tips, and then showcase a bunch of decorated articles. In stenciling, for instance, she advocates using paper doilies or reversing the actual patterns for stencils, followed by a dragonfly suede table, among other ideas. All instructions are geared to beginners; the more than 45 patterns are intended as concepts, not actual patterns. Do it yourself starts right here. Barbara Jacobs
