Making Miniature Furniture
Richard A. Lyons

Feb 2000
Paperback
·

From Library Journal
Coxon gives patterns for making 50 small crafts: tray, jigsaw, and stacking puzzles; birds and animals; counting toys; games; and action toys such as cars. He gives instructions for using basic hand toolsfret, coping, and back saws, and drills. The simple designs are easy to cut, but many require drawing and painting to be really effective. Should appeal to those who like to make toys for kids or to sell at flea markets. Recommended. To Lyons, "miniature" means approximately one-half the size of regular furniturenot "doll-house" miniatures. The author's two-dozen plans for tables, beds, chests, cupboards, and chairs include detailed drawings, a bill of materials, construction steps, and a photo of the finished item. Since all are copies of antiques, the book gives a "historical" note about each piece. Half-size...

Jan 1999

From Library Journal
These three dozen wooden toy projects reflect the late Norman Marshall's naval aviation and engineering background and include airplanes, autos, trains and construction vehicles such as a bulldozer, crane, and steamroller. The designs are not true-to-detail models, but use the bulk qualities of wood in simple ways to give child-appealing stylized versions of the ModelT, F-16, "Santa Fe," etc. Drawings, directions, and materials lists are most adequate for the toys, which measure about a foot in size. While hand tools can be used to make many of the toys, the directions are for power tools, with a bandsaw being quite useful. A brief introduction covers wood, wheels, mass production, gluing, etc. Recommended to crafts collections. W.T. Johnston, Coastal Plain Regional Lib., Tifton, Ga.Copyright 1986 Reed Business...

Book Review
Imagine waking Easter morning to find a basket with jelly beans, chocolate bunnies, marshmallow chicks... and a pretty, sparkly lift-the-flap Easter book! The Golden Egg, while no literary gem, is sure to be appealing to young readers with an eye for all that glitters. Simple rhyming verse tracks Little Duck as she searches high and low for a very special golden Easter egg. Along the way, she elicits the help of a fluffy chick, darling lambs, an elegant swan, and a bevy of bunnies. "They stop beside a babbling brook,/ and Duck lets out a 'Quack!'/ Swan is swimming down the stream,/ and cradled on her back,/ there is an egg so dazzling,/ so bright it makes them blink./ But is it gold? 'Oh, no,'/ says Swan..." (lift the flap) "'My egg is rosy pink!'" Alas, although the eager crew finds dazzling purple, green, blue, silver,...
