Bob Vila's Guide to Buying Your Dream House
Bob Vila

Feb 1990
Paperback
·

From Library Journal
This is something of a departure for the former host of PBS's This Old House , who is better known for his advice on fixing houses than for buying them. Thus, while the physical qualities of the would-be "dream house" are nicely covered in the several chapters on house inspection, the real value of the book is in Vila's explication of the arcane processes related to purchase and finance. These include working with a broker; shopping for a mortgage; making the offer (and negotiating the best price); and surviving the curious ritual of the closing. Throughout, Vila is more cautionary than most writers when considering the true costs of home ownership. He sees the days of speculative real estate investment as mostly over. A house, he says, is to be lived in and enjoyed. A good guide for the first-time home buyer and...

New Politics of Inequality in Latin America: Rethinking Participation and Representation
Douglas A. Chalmers (Editor)

March 1997
Textbook Paperback
·

Book Description
Against a broad backdrop of globalization and worldwide movement toward democracy, the essays in this important new collection examine the unfolding relationships among such phenomena as social change, equity, and democratic representation of the poor in nine different Latin American countries
and Spain. Recent shifts in the composition of inequality and increases in overall disparities of wealth have coincided with governments turning away from historic redistributive politics, and also with the general weakening of political and social organizations traditionally identified with the
"popular sectors." The contributors here suggest that the region must find not just short-term programs to alleviate poverty but long-term means to ensure the effective integration of the poor into political life. The book bridges...

From Publishers Weekly
Vila, host of the PBS series This Old House, which features home improvement and repair projects, here makes recommendations for assembling a properly equipped workshop that includes a range of common and special-purpose tools. He follows with exhaustive listings and analyses of many wood species and the characteristics and suitability of specific types of lumber for particular construction jobs. There are also equally detailed sections on masonry, roofing, exterior siding, doors, windows, flooring, walls and ceilings as well as plumbing and electrical systems and equipment. Like some other guides compiled by professionals, this book occasionally assumes reader knowledge of certain procedures and materials. (In the masonry section, for example, "pointing" is discussed without explanation.) Overall, however,...

Book Review
Mark Bunting's message is both simple and wise: it takes work and perseverance to build the life you want. But anything is easier to build when you have the right tools--and the computer can be an extremely powerful tool. While the book tells of how he managed his own move from hand-to-mouth existence to millionaire status, it's not about getting rich quick. It's about tapping into the resources that computers make available for business, personal relationships, and achieving dreams. The result is highly inspirational--and the practical advice is excellent. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.
