Book Review
Store-bought patterns usually need a bit of finessing to take them from a general size to an individual's perfect fit. Sandra Betzina, the host of HGTV's Sew Perfect, knows exactly how to alter a pattern to compensate for just about every figure flaw or to accommodate any figure type. Fast Fit is packed with dozens of clear analyses of all the "problem areas"--from broad back to thin neck, sloping shoulders to large upper arms, big tummy to bowed legs--and step-by-step solutions to turn a standard pattern into something that corrects the fit in each area.

The introductory section explains how to take proper measurements, choose the right size, and approach the pattern-alteration process. Illustrations of altered patterns show precisely how to cut apart and reposition the pattern pieces, although some details may need a...

From Library Journal
Betzina is well known to home sewers, both for her lively television series, Sew Perfect, and as the author of "Power Sewing," a syndicated column emphasizing time-saving techniques. This book demonstrates that in a short amount of time, a woman can create a complete wardrobe that will be more flattering and comfortable than any ready-to-wear garments she might buy. Nine items, from full pull-on pants to a shawl-collar jacket to an oblong scarf, are the basic elements of this wardrobe. Most can be completed in an evening or two. Betzina suggests appropriate fabrics for each garment and then takes readers through the garment-making process in easy-to-follow timed segments. Note that the Rodale Designer Collection, a collection of multisize patterns, accompanies the book and may need to be stored separately. Even...

Book Review
For those of you who have managed in the past to find the right pattern and the perfect new fabric, only to give up in frustration when the fabric doesn't behave like anything you've used before, Fabric Savvy is here to help. Author Sandra Betzina, host of Home and Garden TV's Sew Perfect, has wrestled with just about every fabric out there, and she's lived to tell about it.

For every material Betzina highlights a multitude of topics, including fabric facts (bulky/drape/breathable/how fabricated), suitability (types of projects), sewing tips, lay-out (and why it matters), interfacing, stitch length, seam finish, closures, and hemming. The categories are thorough, as is the...

Ignore the "home dec" vernacular and even the authors' breezy way of assuming that, hey, anyone with any IQ at all can master a sewing machine. Because here, in Betzina and Valentine's fourth book, is a...

Power Sewing: New Ways to Make Fine Clothes Fast

From Library Journal
Webster, a lecturer and author of several sewing books and videos, knows her stuff. Her writing is insightful, and her advice on commercial patterns and sizing is wonderful. Unfortunately, her book suffers from several serious flaws. The special "lay flat hidden spiral binding" would never hold up to library use: this review's copy is already falling apart. There are insufficient illustrations, a cardinal sin for a how-to book; Webster instead makes blatantly commerical references to her many videos for further illustration. The organization of the text is poor, with no visible divisions between sections, and the example projects are mostly nonclothing items. Not recommended.- Karen Ellis, Baldwin Boettcher Lib., Humble, Tex.Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc.
