Greenhouse Gardener's Companion: Growing Food and Flowers in Your Greenhouse or Sunspace
Shane Smith
1555914500
June 2003
Paperback
·

From Publishers Weekly
There's something refreshing about a gardening book that doesn't start out with soil. Smith ( The Bountiful Solar Greenhouse ) puts off the nitty-gritty subject until chapter nine. In the meantime, he covers such subjects as vegetables, flowers and herbs, light and temperature, ground beds and containers, and crop spacing and scheduling. This is not a complicated book; the operative word for it is "companion." And while some of the advice is rather elementary, it does lead the reader painlessly through the steps and requirements of owning and gardening in a greenhouse. Undoubtedly, Smith's role as a lecturer and host of a radio gardening show has also inspired him to write in terms simple enough for beginners. His saving grace is a quiet sense of humor that's evident throughout the book--from his warnings about...

Boiling Point: How Politicians, Big Oil and Coal, Journalists and Activists Are Fueling the Climate Crisis--And What We Can Do to Avert Disaster
Ross Gelbspan

August 2004
Hardcover
·

From Publishers Weekly
Gelbspan, a Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist, offers no less than a call to arms in this treatise on how global warming is a threat and how it can be avoided. Gelbspan expands the argument about global warming: not only is the current U.S. administration to blame, but journalists and activists are as well. Journalists, he says, are culpable because they are minimizing the story; activists, while well-meaning, are so busy trying to form alliances and make compromises that they lose sight of a problem that Gelbspan believes could ultimately compromise the planet. Gelbspan writes clearly, and he argues that Republican members of Congress have latched onto theories of the few scientists who don't believe that global warming is a major problem. He lays out three of the plans being discussed to attack the...

Gardening in Your Greenhouse
Mark Freeman

June 1998
Paperback
·

From Library Journal
This companion volume to Freeman's Building Your Own Greenhouse (Stackpole, 1997) explains how to raise plants in a home greenhouse. Freeman, who designed and built his own greenhouse, begins with chapters on types of greenhouses, equipment, soil, air, water, heat, light, pests, and diseases. The rest of the book covers growing seedlings for transplanting into the outdoor garden and raising vegetables and herbs in the greenhouse. Freeman lists vegetable, flower, and herb species suitable for growing to maturity in a greenhouse. He also touches on growing houseplants and cut flowers, but specialty plants like orchids and African violets are beyond the scope of the book. Although Freeman refers readers to his earlier book for further information in a few places, this practical introduction to greenhouse gardening is...

Becoming Justice Blackmun: Harry Blackmun's Supreme Court Journey

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Supreme Court justice Harry Blackmun's lifelong connection with Chief Justice Warren Burger—beginning in kindergarten in St. Paul, Minn., and culminating in 16 years together on the Supreme Court—supplies Greenhouse with one of her main organizing themes in this illuminating study of Blackmun's life and intellectual history. Once the closest of friends, Blackmun (1908–1999) and Burger diverged personally and ideologically, beginning in 1973, when Burger assigned Blackmun to write the Court's opinion in Roe v. Wade. Greenhouse, the New York Times's veteran Supreme Court watcher, draws primarily on Blackmun's massive personal archive to show how his authorship of the majority opinion in Roe (7–2) propelled him down several unexpected paths. Blackmun embraced equal protection...

Book Description
Progress has been a consistent part of production technology and marketing in the greenhouse industry since its inception during the latter part of the 17th century in Europe and the latter part of the 18th century in North America. However, against today's backdrop, development was very slow until after World War II when the vast technologies of the war effort were brought to bear on peace time industries. The 1950s ushered in technological advancements in production such as replacement of wood greenhouses by aluminum to free up labor of maintenance, polyethylene coverings that rendered the industry more economically accessible to larger numbers of entrepreneurs, pasteurization of root substrate further freeing up labor of annual soil replacement, automation of watering, conversion from solid to water soluble...
