From Booklist
This copiously illustrated encyclopedia chronicles more than 1,000 DC Comics characters from the 1930s to the present. Arranged alphabetically, each entry gives the first appearance, status (hero, villain, etc.), real name, occupation, height, weight, and eye and hair color of the superheroes or supervillains. Special abilities and superpowers are also listed along with ample cross-references to other comic characters or superleague affiliations, such as the L.E.G.I.O.N. cosmic peacekeeping force. The biographical entries make fascinating reading in alternative history. For example, the Crimson Avenger served in a league called the Seven Soldiers of Victory during World War II. Afterward, he was sent backward in time. He came forward in time and discovered that he was struck with a terminal disease. After his death, an...

Simpsons Comics Extravaganza

Book Description
Welcome to the remarkable first four issues of Simpsons Comics, brought to you by the Bongo Comics Group, a small but overachieving band of merry artists, designers, lawyers and publicists. Their work looks effortless, but the Bongo gang has shed several droplets of sweat, a few droplets of blood, and perhaps even a couple of tears of joy in the making of these comics. Don't worry, however: All Bongo bodily secretions have been wiped off the original art so as not to distract you from your entertainment experience. As Bart might say, "We're proud of these comics, man." As Lisa might say, "Damn, they're good." And as Marge might say, "I don't want you sitting up in that tree house all day reading comic books! You'll ruin your eyes!"

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School–This entertaining guide is chock-full of trivia. Starting with the early 1900s, it is organized primarily by character or book title; hordes of heroes, villains, and the indefinable stride through its colorful pages. Although the contents lean heavily toward the superhero, the author includes a few independents like the hallucinogenic work of R. Crumb and Chris Ware's Jimmy Corrigan: The Smartest Kid on Earth (Knopf, 2000). Characters from children's humor make small appearances as well. Not surprisingly, the entries for the more iconic figures like Superman and Spiderman have significantly more detail than the others. Although comic-book trivia encyclopedias are nothing new, this one stands out because of the excellence of the reproductions of the original art. Just casually flipping...

Book Review
An Excerpt from Bill Watterson's Introduction:

"I’ve loved comic strips as long as I can remember. As a kid, I knew I wanted to be either a cartoonist or an astronaut. The latter was never much of a possibility, as I don’t even like riding in elevators. I kept my options open until seventh grade, but when I stopped understanding math and science, my choice was made. There is great personal satisfaction in attending to detail and quality, and I remain very proud of the standards the strip met day after day. I also liked the responsibility of knowing that, succeed or fail, it was all my own doing. This approach kept the strip very honest and personal--verything having to do with Calvin and Hobbes expressed my own ideas, my own values, my own way. I wrote every word, drew every line, and painted every color....

From School Library Journal
Grade 5 Up For those not familiar with chibi, this is an exaggerated form of manga illustration that squashes the big-eyed characters down for a greater intensity of cuteness. Hart does an excellent job of introducing the concept and of explaining how the drawing technique for this particular style varies from normal manga, and why. Also included are a further exaggerated and simplified form of characters often used for making asides and a section devoted to drawing characters that are varying degrees of feline and human mix. Creative examples are given for all categories, with much potential for sparking the imagination. This volume is a good supplement to more basic manga drawing books that may be in most collections. Reviewed with Scott Beatty's Catwoman.Gr. 6-12. What kind of equipment does Catwoman carry? Where did the Transformers come from? How did Catwoman become who she is? These two oversize, illustration-rich books, on slick paper typical of DK, have all the answers, allowing new readers to come into an established comic character's world without wondering what they have missed. They are also a great way for fans to revisit or understand more about a character's background. In Catwoman the art is lush and varied, covering nearly 65 years of history. transformers uses art to great effect to provide "technical" specs of the robots that readers know and love or want to learn about. Gorgeous, oversize, and well designed, Ultimate X-Men is also perfectly titled. It's a comprehensive overview of four decades of Marvel Comics's monstrously popular mutant superheroes--from their debut, in Stan Lee and Jack Kirby's X-Men #1 (1963), to the terrific X-Men movie (2000).
