I'm Just a DJ But...It Makes Sense to Me
Tom Joyner
044657676X
Sept 2005
Hardcover
·

From Publishers Weekly
Joyner, host of the Tom Joyner Morning Show, which is syndicated in more than 120 American markets, presents an entertaining memoir of his life in radio. He recalls growing up in the segregated South in Tuskegee, Ala., working his way through a Southern black college with odd jobs and then landing a gig behind a radio mike. Joyner's success on the airwaves didn't come overnight: he made several miscues, such as signing on with two radio stations in separate states, doing a show in Chicago in the mornings and then flying to Dallas in the afternoons, only to quit those jobs to take on a "black Casey Kasem" role in a short-lived national countdown show. Much of the book brims with his trademark witticisms regarding personal responsibility, the importance of a solid work ethic, success and "giving something back" to...

WCDMA for UMTS : Radio Access for Third Generation Mobile Communications

September 15, 2004
Hardcover
·

Book Review
As wireless communications technologies evolve, Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) seems a strong candidate for providing multimedia to the handset, as well as Universal Mobile Telecommunications Services (UMTS)--which is to say common wireless communications standards over most of the world. WCDMA for UMTS sets out to decipher the standards documents of the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP). Specifically, this book deals with the 3GPP documents on Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) and Time Division Duplex (TDD) for Universal Terrestrial Radio Access (UTRA). This book should prove valuable to readers who plan to implement WCDMA in hardware designs or service offerings.

A series of engineering problems make up the backbone of the book, and each part of the deployment process is explained via...

A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court (Barnes & Noble Classics Series)
Mark Twain
159308210X
September 2005
Paperback
·

From School Library Journal
Grade 5 Up-While Mark Twain is most often identified with his childhood home on the Mississippi, he wrote many of his enduring classics during the years he lived in Hartford, Connecticut. He had come a long way from Hannibal when he focused his irreverent humor on medieval tales, and wrote A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court. The hit on the head that sent protagonist Hank Morgan back through 13 centuries did not affect his natural resourcefulness. Using his knowledge of an upcoming eclipse, Hank escapes a death sentence, and secures an important position at court. Gradually, he introduces 19th century technology so the clever Morgan soon has an easy life. That does not stop him from making disparaging, tongue-in-cheek remarks about the inequalities and imperfections of life in Camelot....

A Do Right Man
Omar Tyree

Oct 1998
Paperback

From Library Journal
Unlike his previous book (Flyy Girl, LJ 9/15/96), which was basically a YA novel, this is for adults and, ironically, less vulgar. Narrator Bobby Dallas begins the story as he is graduating from Howard University in Washington, D.C., and seeking a career in radio. Like Flyy Girl, this book has its problems, starting with the repetitious plot line: Bobby meets girl. Bobby gets job. Bobby loses girl. Bobby loses job. Bobby is confused. By midbook, the emotional chaos of the main character becomes annoying. The author has done an impressive amount of research into the world of radio and gives an honest if tiring interpretation of a black man struggling to do right, while getting it all wrong. By the penultimate chapter, it appears that Bobby Dallas, now successful in radio at the age of 31, will never find a woman who...

Radio On: A Listener's Diary
Sarah Vowell
0312183011
December 1997
Paperback
·

From Booklist
Vowell's survey of the current state of American AM and FM radio concentrates on the Chicago-area airwaves and Montana State University's KGLT in Bozeman. Aside from Nirvana, Hole, and KGLT, Vowell doesn't find much to like. NPR is too stodgy, Garrison Keillor too sappy, Republicans and Rush Limbaugh simply too much. She likes Chicago's quirky, low-powered WZRD, though, especially its airing of the Church of the SubGenius' Hour of Slack, and also establishment rock critics Greil Marcus and Jim DeRogatis. Vowell expresses her opinions strongly and forthrightly. Her criticisms of NPR and Keillor, for that matter, are hard for even their fans to disagree with, but panning Keillor while praising smarmy NPR elder newswoman Susan Stamberg seems odd, and getting the call letters of Chicago's all-sports station wrong casts...

Sneaky Uses for Everyday Things: How to Turn a Penny into a Radio, Make a Flood Alarm with an Aspirin, Change Milk into Plastic, Extract Water and Electricity from Thin Air, Turn on a TV with Your Ring, and Other Amazing Feats
Cy Tymony
0740738593
September 2003
Paperback
·

From Publishers Weekly
Offering readers a chance to become real-life MacGyvers, Tymony (Computer Gamer's Survival Guide) shares a mixed bag of useful and useless tricks. The book, which may remind 007s-in-training of The Worst-Case Scenario Survival Handbook, offers sections on gimmicks, gadgets and survival techniques (the last section is by far the most valuable). Tymony's tips for fashioning gel packs for swollen muscles (out of water, rubbing alcohol and a plastic bag) and for making a fire extinguisher out of kitchen supplies (with baking soda and vinegar) are undoubtedly functional. But other suggestions, such as placing bubble wrap underneath a doormat to alert you when someone's standing on the other side of your door, or making a videotape rewinder out of a paper clip and a hanger, are somewhat farfetched. Still, adventurous,...

Voices of Summer
Curt Smith

From Booklist
If anything arouses baseball fans more than the teams they follow, it is the announcers who call--indeed, embody--the games those teams play. Smith, longtime sports--broadcasting historian, certainly understands this notion as he offers his provocative selection of the top 101 baseball announcers of all time, from the pioneers of the 1920s (Graham McNamee) to today's best (Jon Miller, Skip Caray, Tim McCarver). Each entry lists (and judges) a broadcaster's longevity, continuity, awards, fan popularity, use of language, quality of voice, and knowledge--ending with a point total and ranking. Most impressive is Smith's encyclopedic yet readable essay on each broadcaster, many of whom he seems to have known personally. His top pick, Dodger announcer Vin Scully, may be beyond argument; everyone else is fair game. Readers will...
