Neural Networks for Pattern Recognition
Chris Bishop

Paperback

Book Review
This book provides a solid statistical foundation for neural networks from a pattern recognition perspective. The focus is on the types of neural nets that are most widely used in practical applications, such as the multi-layer perceptron and radial basis function networks. Rather than trying to cover many different types of neural networks, Bishop thoroughly covers topics such as density estimation, error functions, parameter optimization algorithms, data pre-processing, and Bayesian methods. All topics are organized well and all mathematical foundations are explained before being applied to neural networks. The text is suitable for a graduate or advanced undergraduate level course on neural networks or for practitioners interested in applying neural networks to real-world problems. The reader is assumed to have the...

The Bishop in the Old Neighborhood (Blackie Ryan Series)
Andrew M. Greeley

November 2005
Hardcover
·

From Publishers Weekly
The first half of Greeley's fifth Bishop Blackie Ryan book (after 2003's The Bishop Goes to the University) drags a bit, but the pace picks up when Blackie starts digging into the past of Father Mikal Wolodyjowski, the charismatic priest at St. Lucy's, a Chicago church where three corpses have turned up in the sanctuary. Blackie discovers that Wolodyjowski was peripherally involved with the odd deaths of six college kids 60 years earlier, a mystery that proves to be more engaging than the initial deaths at St. Lucy's. Unfortunately, the novel's other main subplot—the blossoming romance between a cop and a lawyer—borders on the far-fetched. The pace, melodrama and gravitas with which young love blooms will strike any reader under 40 as laughable. And Greeley spends too much time musing on the tensions...

From AudioFile
Intrigue and confusion surround the murder of eccentric Brother Popov, a Russian Orthodox monk found inside his locked office at the divinity school in Chicago. Bishop Blackie Ryan, a priest who is also an amateur detective, is dispatched by the Cardinal to solve the locked-door mystery. Narrator Paul Michael's crisp delivery, academic sounding tones, and Russian accents define the characters. But even deft narration can't save this convoluted tale, slowed by back story and a romance irrelevant to the plot. Even gunfire and a missing journal with keys to the mystery don't move this story forward. This one's a disappointment to Greeley fans. From Publishers Weekly
Full of unexpected turns and twists, Greeley's popular series featuring the wry, resourceful Bishop John Blackwood Ryan continues, with the spiritual sleuth on the hunt for a young, charismatic priest missing in Paris. Blackie, as Ryan is fondly called, is dispatched by Chicago Archbishop Cronin to solve the disappearance of Father Jean-Claude while escorting the church official's sister-in-law Nora Cronin on her vacation to the City of Lights. Distrusted by the church hierarchy for his growing popularity, the telegenic Frenchman vanished without a trace while guiding TV producers through the famed cathedral of Notre-Dame, causing widespread rumors of foul play and unrest among his young followers. Blackie's efforts to gain the cooperation of church officials are thorough (too much so), but Greeley pumps new life...

Book Review
Traditional neural network computing uses continuous propagation of its signals, whereas biological networks use signal timing and frequency in their transmission and computation. Pulsed Neural Networks arose out of a two-day workshop at the Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Studies at Cambridge, and provides a broad overview of the comparatively recent developments in building and working with these machines.

A compelling foreword by Terrence J. Sejnowski explains the basics. Several tutorial chapters covering biological and electronic pulsed computing follow. The rest of the book is divided into two parts: "Implementations" and "Design and Analysis of Pulsed Neural Systems."

Useful for neuroscientists, engineers, and, of course, computer scientists, Pulsed Neural Networks requires a certain familiarity with...

Book Review
Bishop Blackie Ryan--who spends more time troubleshooting and solving crimes than he does on spiritual matters--is back in action in a paperback original that's sure to delight Father Andrew M. Greeley's faithful fans. Sent by his boss, Cardinal Cronin, to the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Langley ostensibly to perform a confirmation, Blackie finds that his detecting talents are more in demand than his devotional ones. ("Those of you who have seen the film Pulp Fiction will doubtless remember Harvey Keitel. He was a sweeper, a person designated by God and his betters to sweep up the mess left by higher-ups in the outfit. That's what I am, Sean Cronin's sweeper") Disappearing crew members and other strange occurrences have led to talk of the new ship being haunted, a situation that dedicated...

Pattern Recognition and Machine Learning

Book Description
The dramatic growth in practical applications for machine learning over the last ten years has been accompanied by many important developments in the underlying algorithms and techniques. For example, Bayesian methods have grown from a specialist niche to become mainstream, while graphical models have emerged as a general framework for describing and applying probabilistic techniques. The practical applicability of Bayesian methods has been greatly enhanced by the development of a range of approximate inference algorithms such as variational Bayes and expectation propagation, while new models based on kernels have had a significant impact on both algorithms and applications. This completely new textbook reflects these recent developments while providing a comprehensive introduction to the fields of pattern recognition...

The integration of classic field-gathered data with new computer models has allowed many new advances in geomorphology, which the 31st Binghamton Millennium Symposium 2000 presents in this latest of the well-known Binghamton book series, the Integration of Computer Modeling and Field Observations in Geomorphology.

Conceptual models have been most commonly inferred from analyses of topography and investigator perspectives derived from fieldwork. The main stumbling blocks to understanding surface
processes, their interactions,...

From Publishers Weekly
Fun is the word for bestseller Greeley's latest, lively Bishop Blackie (aka Blackwell) Ryan thriller. It's not a whodunit, but a hoodoo-done-it, the mystery being Who's the hoodoo? A poltergeist is stalking the corridors of the White House, threatening to embarrass the president, who's already confronting a fiercely divided Congress, accusations of sexual harassment and the threat of civil war in China. The press has dubbed President John Patrick McGurn "Machine Gun McGurn" and accused him of being a tool of the Chicago Irish Mafia. The far right view him as no less than Satan himself, being an Irishman, a Catholic and a liberal Democrat. There are rumors (which are true) of conspiracies to discredit McGurn and plots (also true) to take his life. Blackie receives an invitation to the White House from the...

Book Review
The Bishop and the Missing L Train is the ninth entry in Andrew Greeley's deservedly popular Father Blackie Ryan series. Auxiliary Bishop Augustus Quill, recently posted to the Chicago Archdiocese, could not be described as a loved man. His nickname, bestowed upon him by fellow seminarians, is "Idiot." Despite his relatively high position, one that implies significant intelligence, wit, piety, and compassion, the man seems lacking in all departments save piety. In fact, so disliked is Quill that someone is willing to stop at nothing--at least nothing short of absconding with an entire subway car, bishop included--to keep him from his appointed rounds.

Sean Cardinal Cronin, the Archbishop of Chicago, is no more a fan of Quill's than anyone. Still, the act of losing a bishop (or, more precisely, not retrieving...

Book Description
The only resource available to help calculate investment value versus fair market value

Whether buying or selling, the question of "what's it worth?" is multifaceted. In an M&A setting, it is necessary to compute fair market value, but it is far more important to compute investment value-the value of the target company to a strategic buyer. This calculation varies with each prospective buyer, depending on synergies, benefits, and other competitive analyses that are seldom involved in business valuation. Valuation for M&A is the first book to focus on valuation for merger and acquisitions. This groundbreaking guide provides document request checklists, sample interview questions, a format for adjusting financial statements, a format for developing discount rates, a format for computation of net...
