Book Description
The stranger, having finished this message, turned abruptly, and, with a quick, but silent step quitted the room, before Schalken had time to say a word in reply. The young man felt a curiosity to see in what direction the burgher of Rotterdam would turn, on quitting the studio, and for that purpose he went directly to the window which commanded the door. A lobby of considerable extent intervened between the inner door of the painter's room and the street entrance, so that Schalken occupied the post of observation before the old man could possibly have reached the street. He watched in vain, however.

Book Description
Late one evening, as some little boys from the village were returning from a ramble through the dark and devious glen of Cappercullen, with their pockets laden with nuts and "frahans," to their amazement and even terror they saw a light streaming redly from the narrow window of one of the towers overhanging the precipice among the ivy and the lofty branches, across the glen, already dim in the shadows of the deepening night.

Book Description
With Dr. Martin Hesselius, five of whose cases are brought together in this superb collection, Sheridan Le Fanu contributed a major figure to the ranks of those occult doctors, forensic experts, and special investigators who enthralled the Victorian reading public. Each case presents its own peculiar revelation. In 'Green Tea' a quiet English clergyman is haunted by a spectral monkey. Captain Barton of Dublin is scared literally to death by the appearance in miniature of a man whom he knows to have died in Naples; this is his 'Familiar.' The young narrator of 'The Room in the Dragon Volant' is more or less buried alive in a French roadside inn. The hanging judge, Mr. Justice Harbottle, in the story of that name, is condemned to hang himself. 'Carmilla' links sexual perversion and vampirism in the woods of lower...

Book Description
A beautiful heroine marries the heir to a local estate--but what sounds like a happy ending is just the beginning of a chilling and suspenseful thriller. Set in rural England of the 1820s, The Wyvern Mystery takes its title from ancient myth, in which a two-legged dragon called the wyvern signifies the truly sinister. Dark hints of the supernatural permeate this 1869 horror classic, in which a young bride is imperiled not only by secrets from the past but also by evil machinations of the present. Its author, J. Sheridan Le Fanu, was the Victorian equivalent of Stephen King, and this compelling Gothic novel attests to the enduring appeal of his works. Unabridged republication of the classic 1869 edition.
