A Wizard's Dozen: Stories of the Fantastic
Michael Stearns
October 1993
From School Library Journal
Grade 8 Up-A collection of 13 stories that goes far beyond the typical swords/ quests/evil wizards perception of fantasy. The selections are well written, neatly plotted works that showcase a wide range of styles. Each one will leave readers with plenty to muse over. Some are delightfully silly, such as Will Shetterly's "Princess Who Kicked Butt"; others explore more serious themes, such as Vivian Vande Velde's "Lost Soul," in which a young man is seduced by a water nymph. Because the tales are all so short, this title would be perfect for those who read on the run, or for group discussion. A balanced and pleasing introduction to the genre.Patricia A. Wellington's Peninsula Regiments (1): the Irish
Mike Chappell
February 2003
Book Description
The forces which Wellington led in Portugal and Spain and up into southern France between 1808 and 1814 achieved a consistent record of victory perhaps unmatched in the history of the British Army. Some 40 per cent of this volunteer army were Irishmen – a remarkable figure, given the recent unrest and bloodshed in Ireland. This book details the record, and illustrates the uniforms and equipment, of the two cavalry and three infantry units boasting formal Irish identity: the 4th (Royal Irish) Dragoon Guards, 18th Hussars, 27th (Enniskillen), 87th (Prince of Wales's Own Irish), and 88th (Connaught Rangers) Regiments of Foot.
