Sept 2000
Hardcover

From School Library Journal
Gr 4-7-Children looking for exciting, real-life survival stories will be attracted by the cover of this collection of first-person accounts of three disasters: the 1914 shipwreck of the Empress of Ireland, the 1928 crash of the airship Italia, and the 1930 crash of the dirigible R-101. However, the lack of illustrations and rather pedestrian writing is disappointing. There is liberal fictionalizing of dialogue, thoughts, etc. and there are no source notes to establish veracity. The list of recommended reading contains mostly out-of-print and old titles that will be hard to locate. Libraries looking for more on famous shipwrecks, including the Empress of Ireland, may do well with Robert D. Ballard's Ghost Liners: Exploring the World's Greatest Lost Ships (Little, Brown, 1998). Youngsters wanting information...
