Book Description
Ask some women their age, and they'll demur. Ask others, like Joni Mitchell or Cybill Shepherd, and they'll take up a sword. In this inspirational book, 50 women ranging in age from their 40s to their 60s-including movie and television personalities, musicians, and Olympic athletes-are presented in stunning photographs holding a sword to symbolize their passionate and courageous approach to aging. Their stories are told alongside the pictures, capturing the experiences of the 38 million women of the Baby Boom generation who are challenging the age barrier and living the second half of their lives to the fullest.

Coauthors Nancy Alspaugh and Marilyn Kentz are founders of the Fearless Aging movement, which encourages women to discard outdated views of getting older and celebrate who they are today. Joan Lunden,...

Book Review
Drawn to the Grave is a short, tight novel with a simple premise, the grotesque implications of which are spelled out in full by midway through the first chapter. This approach allows the reader to concentrate on the characters: an arrogant man who is trapped by fate and weakness into performing the same horrible act of supernatural violence over and over, the woman he has just victimized, and the woman he plans to victimize next. As in the classic tale of "Bluebeard," the question of "Will it happen again?" is much less important than the nuances of how the pattern unfolds, mostly seen through the eyes of next victim. She is a college student on a solitary hiking trip who stumbles into the eerie and beautiful setting--a wide river in a remote, wooded area.

This is Mary Ann Mitchell's first novel: it...

Fitzhugh Brundage, University of Florida, author of Lynching in the New South
"[T]he best, most comprehensive, and most important biography of a southern black editor during the era of Jim Crow."

Book Description
Although he has largely receded from the public consciousness, John Mitchell Jr., the editor and publisher of the Richmond Planet, was well known to many black, and not a few white, Americans in his day. A contemporary of Booker T. Washington, Mitchell contrasted sharply with Washington in temperament. In his career as an editor, politician, and businessman, Mitchell followed the trajectory of optimism, bitter disappointment, and retrenchment that characterized African American life in the Reconstruction and Jim Crow South. Best known for his crusade against lynching in the 1880s,...
