From AudioFile
This is a real treat for fans of the original "Star Trek." William Shatner not only co-wrote the piece, but also plays all the characters, including, of course, Captain James T. Kirk. It's interesting to hear Shatner's versions of mainstays like Spock, Bones, Uhuru, and Sulu--we are provided an actor's "ear view" of how they may have sounded to him. The recording is finely produced audio theater, featuring slick original music and authentic sound effects, with close attention paid to phrasing and levels. The story contrasts Kirk's impetuousness with companion Captain Jean-Luc Picard's conservatism in the face of a bevy of threats. A rousing space opera! From Library Journal
In Dark Victory, the mirror universe is a dim shadow of the Federation, ruled by a cruel tyrant, Emperor Tiberius. Much to the dismay of James T. Kirk, Tiberius is also Kirk's double and is determined to destroy him, whom he considers to be a weak and embarrassing twin. The action can be a bit confusing for listeners unfamiliar with Spectre, the first title in this series, but it doesn't take long to get one's bearings. Unfortunately, those looking for a satisfying conclusion must wait for the third installment. Shatner is in top form and, along with great sound effects, does an admirable job of resurrecting his signature character. Trekkies of all stripes will clamor for this one, but be prepared to purchase the entire series, as individual titles do not stand alone. Recommended for all sf collections. A few...

From Publishers Weekly
Muirhead, a scientist-engineer at NASA, and science fiction writers Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens, who have written numerous Star Trek novels, present with aplomb information about Mars and the people who study it. With its cheery, conversational tone-sidebar headings include "Martians Invade New Jersey!" and "The Photos NASA Doesn't Want You to See!"-this work may hold the most appeal for teens, but adults without a science background will learn a great deal and be entertained along the way. The interweaving of factual and fictitious representations of the red planet-from The Princess of Mars and The War of the Worlds to the canals once thought to be on Mars's surface and the pictures sent back by the rovers-gives this book a unique perspective. The primary text traces the life trajectories of the...

Of all the experiences shared by Captain Kirk and the crew of the Starship Enterprise™ during their first five-year mission, two were among the most perilous: a journey to the nonphysical realm of Transition where the massive computer known as Memory Prime was situated, and the nightmarish mission to Talin IV, a world poised on the brink of destruction that Kirk was forbidden to save. In the twenty-third century, a hundred years before a sentient artificial life-form would be allowed to earn a Starfleet commission, the Federation considers the use of self-aware artificial intelligences to be little more than slavery, except for the immense computer system of Memory Prime -- the key hub in the Federation's vast network of interstellar library planets. There, the A.I.s known as Pathfinders inhabit Transition -- a...
