Book Review
On August 5, 1949, lightning came crashing down in the vast spruce forest above Seeley Lake, Montana, and touched off a roaring blaze. As every Westerner knows, lightning means fire, but the fire that raged through Mann Gulch that day was huge--the sort that occurs only every few decades. A battery of paratrooper-firefighters, many of them fresh veterans of World War II, had been anticipating it, and even looking forward to the chance to fight a great fire. Before the day ended thirteen of those smokejumpers lay dead, their charred remains evidence that something had gone terribly wrong. Norman Maclean gives a thorough account of the incident in language not meant for the squeamish: "Burning to death on a mountainside is dying at least three times ... first, considerably ahead of the fire, you reach the verge of death...

Review
"The emphasis on commercial applications, combined with the broader coverage of animals, makes Animals with Novel Genes a useful addition to the growing literature on transgenic animals." Choice

Book Description
This book is about transgenic animals--animals into which new genes have been artificially introduced. It has chapters by leading authorities on the present state-of-play regarding the application of the transgenic technology to different animal groups. Scientists have conducted experiments on a great range of animal types, ranging from protozoan cells, through nematode worms and fruit flies to many higher vertebrates, and this book provides an in-depth, up-to-date, comprehensive and authoritative account of the work with all such animal types. The likely impact of...

Book Review
A work that consumed 14 years of Maclean's life, and earned a 1992 National Book Critics Circle Award, Young Men and Fire tells the story of a Rocky Mountain forest fire that that claimed the lives of 13 young smoke jumpers on August 5, 1949, at Mann Gulch, Montana. The firefighters perished in a "blowup"--an explosive, 2,000-degree firestorm 300 feet deep and 200 feet tall. The excruciating detail of this book makes for a sobering reading experience. Maclean--a former University of Chicago English professor and avid fisherman--also wrote A River Runs Through It and Other Stories, which is set along the Missouri River, one gulch downstream from Mann.

From AudioFile
It is difficult to say that anyone reads this audiobook. John Maclean speaks to us about his father, Norman, who is best known as the author of A RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT. The cassette also contains National Public Radio interviews with John and Norman. Perhaps most pleasurable to the fans of Norman Maclean will be his readings of his own work with the sound of the river in the background. Maclean does not possess a great voice, and the recordings are not of the highest quality; but hearing Maclean himself overcomes those defects. Listening to the sagacious Maclean with the sound of the water in the background may be worth the cost of the audiobook. Fly-Fishin' Fool: The Adventures, Misadventures, and Outright Idiocies of a Compulsive Angler
James R. Babb

From Booklist
The theme in Babb's third book is "having fun while attempting to catch fish," preferably in congenial company. The 31 essays in the book explore saltwater and freshwater fly-fishing. Babb, editor of Gray's Sporting Journal, and his friends bring an Algonquin Round Table-like camaraderie to their fishing trips, and his essays capture the free-flowing conversation, whether about politics and the environmental impacts of fishing or about fly tying and fly design. Along the way, he also takes time to share some delectable recipes (including his grandmother's fried chicken). An Appalachian native, he also spices the text with evocative vignettes of Appalachian life. Fish-lit fans will especially enjoy comparing Babb's descriptions of angling trips with John Gierach to Gierach's versions of the same events in his...
