To Engineer Is Human: The Role of Failure in Successful Design
Henry Petroski
0679734163
March 1992
Paperback
·

Book Review
The moral of this book is that behind every great engineering success is a trail of often ignored (but frequently spectacular) engineering failures. Petroski covers many of the best known examples of well-intentioned but ultimately failed design in action -- the galloping Tacoma Narrows Bridge (which you've probably seen tossing cars willy-nilly in the famous black-and-white footage), the collapse of the Kansas City Hyatt Regency Hotel walkways -- and many lesser known but equally informative examples. The line of reasoning Petroski develops in this book were later formalized into his quasi-Darwinian model of technological evolution in The Evolution of Useful Things, but this book is arguably the more illuminating -- and defintely the more enjoyable -- of these two titles. Highly recommended.

May 2005
Hardcover
·

Book Description
Instrumentation technicians work on pneumatics, electronic instruments, digital logic devices and computer-based process controls. Because so much of their work involves computerized devices, they need an extensive knowledge of electronics, and most have degrees in electronics technology. Most textbooks in this area are written for four year institutions and lack the practical flavor that is needed in technical schools or community colleges. Designed as a text for use in community colleges or vocational schools, this up to date text is unsurpassed in its treatment of such subjects as: instruments and parameters, electrical components(both analog and digital) various types of actuators and regulators, plumbing and instrumentation diagrams and Operation of process controllers.

From Library Journal
Electricity is one of the least understood yet most important aspects of do-it-yourself building and renovation. Used safely, it allows us to enjoy a life of convenience, but when its basic rules are violated it can destroy one's home. A master electrician, building inspector, and licensed general contractor, Cauldwell shows how to properly use electricity in this revision of his 1996 text. Starting with electricity's basics, he then explains tools of all types, shows how and where electricity enters the house, and explains grounding (which is vital for safety). Proceeding through the house, Cauldwell demonstrates how to wire both new construction and renovations and to install receptacles, switches, fixtures, and wired-in appliances. Important safety information is provided, including ground-fault circuit...
