Book Review
Microsoft Press Computer Dictionary defines terms and acronyms pertaining to all areas of computing, including hardware, networks, programming, applications, and databases. Unlike some dictionaries, it does not attempt to tackle companies, well-known commercial products, proprietary technologies (except some from Microsoft itself), and cyberculture. However, it does an excellent job of clarifying concepts and explaining abstruse technical terms in easy-to-understand language. This dictionary is a fine resource for either beginning or advanced computer users.

From Book News, Inc.
A comprehensive dictionary for people who work with microcomputers but aren't computer professionals. Some 5,000 entries define both basic and more advanced terms, and include phonetic pronunciations where...

terms in context...Practicing engineers could benefit from the present dictionary because of its tighter focus and lengthy appendixes.

Review
Choice : From review by: M. T. Kochis, California State University, Sacramento

This dictionary focuses broadly on electrical, computer, and electronics engineering and touches on related areas such as mathematics and communications. It arranges headwords alphabetically and precedes each term with an abbreviation for its field, which helps place terms in context, e.g., "electromag" for electromagnetism. The approximately 18,000 terms are taken from McGraw-Hill Dictionary of Scientific and Technical Terms (6th ed., CH, Mar'03), a much larger dictionary (110,000 terms) that covers both natural and applied sciences. Since most...

Book Review
Despite the word "college" in the title, The American Heritage College Dictionary is the best choice for anyone who's looking for a substantive desk dictionary but isn't quite ready to commit to the space an unabridged takes. With more than 200,000 definitions and biographical and geographical notes, along with crisp photos, drawings, and diagrams in every margin, The American Heritage College Dictionary packs a lot into its 1664 pages. Under "lock," for example, you'll find both a diagram explaining how your key fits into and opens one, as well as a photo of boats passing through a river lock in Heidelberg, Germany. The actual definition section for "lock" shows 5 uses as a noun and 14 as a verb, followed by the idioms "lock horns" and "lock, stock, and barrel," and an etymological note that the word comes from the Old...

Wired Style

Book Review
Remarkably more down-to-earth than its predecessor, the revised Wired Style guide is a handy little reference for digerati, or those who think they are. This version is much more accessible to general Internet users, not unlike the Web, which has become more mainstream in the three years since the original publication was released. (The previous edition was criticized for its pomposity and near-incomprehensibility.) This revision still delivers the inside scoop, though. You'll not only learn how to talk about cyberspace (for example, you can read about the evolution of the term "email" and why Wired prefers it without the hyphen), you'll also get an encyclopedic listing of all the trendy lingo that describes it.

Geared heavily toward high-tech communications writers but of use to any Web surfer, this pocket-size manual...

Macmillan Dictionary for Children

Book Review
Learning to use a dictionary is an important skill for young scholars, and MacMillan offers a great edition for 8 to 14 year olds. The Dictionary for Children is sensible, well designed, and illustrated with plenty of pictures. Each letter gets a mini-exploration of its role in sounds and spelling; for example, "B has only one sound in English, as in bad and both, but it is sometimes doubled as in rabbit. The letter B is also silent in some words such as climb, comb, or plumber." Definitions are clear but not oversimplified, and homonyms are identified so that spellers won't be confused: words that sound like flue "are flew and flu." The type is large enough to be readable, and the tone is serious but not pretentious. The...

Grade 7 Up--When the Oxford University Press produced the expanded second edition of its Spanish dictionary in 2001, it was broadened to include 275,000 words and phrases and contained 450,000 translations. The hefty tome covered both European and Mexican Spanish. This edition expands the second by 25,000 words (about half on each side of the dictionary) and 50,000 translations. To catch contemporary words and usages, a combination of Web-based technology and vetting by native speakers was employed, resulting in the addition of technological and business vocabulary, as well as slang and buzz words. Covering all 24 varieties of regional Spanish, the dictionary also sports a new layout, with words in blue and definitions in a clean, though small, black type.
