From Publishers Weekly
"It's amazing there has never been a source to turn to for all the basic information about the movies," writes Clint Eastwood in his introduction to The American Film Institute Desk Reference: The Complete Guide to Everything You Need to Know About the Movies. Responding to Eastwood's observation, editors Melinda Corey and George Ochoa have packed this colossal volume with information on "movie basics" (the fundamentals of how films are made); "movie crafts" (aspects of the business, including acting and special effects); profiles of actors, directors and others; and lists of significant films. Throughout, celebrity essays written by Angela Lansbury, Martin Scorsese and a handful of others add a unique perspective. Copyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Marilyn Encyclopedia

Book Review
The Marilyn Encyclopedia is, according to its jacket notes, "the most comprehensive book about [Marilyn Monroe's] extraordinary life and legacy ever published." This may easily be true--it is incredibly, insanely detailed. Author Adam Victor has taken every conceivable source of Marilyn information--admittedly including Internet rumors and Hollywood gossip among the more well-documented tidbits--distilled them down to alphabetical entries, and cross-referenced them to within an inch of their lives. While the casual fan can check out Marilyn's Look covers or a list of the screenwriters she worked with, hardcore devotees can look up such vital information as the name of the first restaurant she and Joe DiMaggio ate at on their honeymoon (a controversy--was it the restaurant at the Hot Springs Hotel or at the Clifton Inn?) or...

From Booklist
The enjoyment of reviewing this book took a downward spiral after it was discovered that portions of the book were published earlier by the author in Opera on Screen (Sunburst, 1997), even though the introduction to the new volume states "There is no other guide like it." Entries have been revised from the earlier title, and there are also new entries. The arrangement remains the same, with singers, cities, operas, halls, composers, etc., interfiled in a letter-by-letter alphabetization. Wlaschin also provides subjective entries, such as Best opera on video and Worst opera on film.Within entries, films are listed chronologically, with a short summary, the cast, timing, format, and distributor included. The breadth of opera is illustrated in entries for Walt Disney and Maurice Sendak. A smattering of...

From Library Journal
Hischak (SUNY at Cortland) continues his series on musical theater (e.g., Stage It with Music: An Encyclopedic Guide to the American Musical Theatre, LJ 6/15/93) with this comprehensive review of songs written for musical films. Coverage is restricted to songs actually written for film, so one finds "Hopelessly Devoted to You" from Grease but not other songs from the stage version. A useful section on "Songs from Other Sources" includes titles from well-known musical films (e.g., "Some Enchanted Evening" from South Pacific) for readers who don't know whether a song was composed specifically for the film version. Entries, arranged by song title, include vocalist, composer, lyricist, and information on the place of the song in the film, as well as recordings by artists other than those in the film.
