*Starred Review* The first edition of this work was published in 1996 under the editorship of Jack Salzman, David Lionel Smith, and Cornel West. A supplement appeared in 2001. Now we have a new edition edited by Palmer, a history professor at Princeton University, and published in association with the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture of the New York Public Library. As outlined in the preface, the encyclopedia now contains nearly 1,300 entries, as opposed to 2,500 entries in the first edition and supplement. Original authors (or, in some cases, the publisher) took the opportunity to revise or update around half of the approximately 800 articles that were carried over from the first edition. Examples of the nearly 400 new articles are Anthropology and anthropologists; Astronauts; Berry, Halle; Black-Indian... |

From School Library Journal
Grade 5 Up-A broad, illustrated look at the history of humanity. The book is divided into 10 sections, each representing a different time period from 40,000 B.C.E. to the present. All of them begin with a "Glance" at the world for the given dates. Following these brief overviews, double and single-page spreads subdivide the eras into smaller time segments covering topics such as "The Gupta Dynasty A.D. 321-510," "East India Companies 1600-1700," and "Benin and Zimbabwe 1100-1480." The spreads contain a few bite-sized paragraphs of facts, informative captions, and, often, an inset of "Key Dates." They are profusely illustrated with quality black-and-white and full-color photographs, drawings, reproductions, and maps, and feature a helpful time line running across the tops of the pages. Information on art,... |

From Booklist
This copiously illustrated encyclopedia chronicles more than 1,000 DC Comics characters from the 1930s to the present. Arranged alphabetically, each entry gives the first appearance, status (hero, villain, etc.), real name, occupation, height, weight, and eye and hair color of the superheroes or supervillains. Special abilities and superpowers are also listed along with ample cross-references to other comic characters or superleague affiliations, such as the L.E.G.I.O.N. cosmic peacekeeping force. The biographical entries make fascinating reading in alternative history. For example, the Crimson Avenger served in a league called the Seven Soldiers of Victory during World War II. Afterward, he was sent backward in time. He came forward in time and discovered that he was struck with a terminal disease. After his death, an... |

*Starred Review* The Encyclopedia of New England follows in the pattern of previously published state, city, and regional encyclopedias. As with several of the others, this title is the product of a university press, in this case Yale University Press, which carries its own level of scholarly authority. Combining the six states of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island is a logical choice. So much of the early history of these states is intertwined, and most would agree that there is a strong regional character that ties them together. As stated in the introduction, the encyclopedia's creation was motivated by "the relation between the perennial idea of New England's fixed regional identity and the fact that life in the six states is constantly changing." Rather than a... |

Book Review
The "Langer Encyclopedia," as the professional academics call The Encyclopedia of World History originally edited by the late William L. Langer, is basically a history of everything--and an outstanding reference volume. Want to know why the English called their 10th-century king Ethelred "the Unready"? See page 181. Or what the Ottoman Empire's constitution of 1876 said? See page 531. Or when women in Honduras got the vote? See page 955. This sixth edition, completely updated and revised by a team of scholars led by George Mason University's Peter N. Stearns, packs all it can into a year-by-year and region-by-region chronicle of human life on planet Earth. The book is big, the type is small, and the maps and genealogical tables are excellent. Stearns has added more material on women, leisure activities, and... |

This third edition of the 1988 reference, full of the same back-to-basics philosophy of the earlier volumes, promises to once again serve as a lightning rod for lively discussion. Divided into chapters such as "The Bible" (the editors point out that, regardless of one's religion, it is impossible to be culturally literate without some Biblical knowledge, just as one needs to know the Koran to be literate in Arab culture), "Technology," "Idioms," "World Geography," "Mythology and Folklore" (which includes everything from Medusa to Mickey Mouse) and "Literature in English," the book is a compendium of thumbnail definitions of the bedrock items that make up society. This latest volume includes about 500 (out of nearly 7,000) new entries, 200 of which are in the science and technology chapters. Other entries have... |

Imagine, the original Berserkers were "savage Norse soldiers" of the Middle Ages who went into battle stark naked! Or consider the Etruscan habit of writing in "boustrophedon style." Intrigued? Well, either hunker down with your own Encyclopædia Britannica, or buy Esquire editor Jacobs's memoir of the year he spent reading all 32 volumes of the 2002 edition—that's 33,000 pages with some 44 million words. Jacobs set out on this delightfully eccentric endeavor attempting to become the "smartest person in the world," although he agrees smart doesn't mean wise. Apart from the sheer pleasure of scaling a major intellectual mountain, Jacobs figured reading the encyclopedia from beginning to end would fill some gaps in his formal education and greatly increase his "quirkiness factor." McSorley's Old Ale House? Park Slope? Madame Restell? Pfaff's Cellar? CBGB? Look 'em up... Just about anyplace or anyone notable in New York is contained in this huge book, which is roughly the size of the Manhattan white pages. The Encyclopedia of New York City is a fitting tribute to the city it both documents and celebrates: it's a sprawling and endlessly interesting read. This unique project was supervised by the New York Historical Society, and boasts more than 4300 alphabetical entries (with hundreds of illustrations) spanning 1300 pages--a feast of facts. You're not sure when New York's first subway opened? Don't know the capacity of Ebbett's Field? Can't place "Dead Man's Curve?" Puh-leeeze... just look it up!
