The Right Words at the Right Time: Your Turn!, Vol. 2
Marlo Thomas
0743497430
April 2006
Hardcover
·

From Publishers Weekly
"That Girl" Thomas follows up her bestselling inspirational volume, which collected stories from luminaries describing times when well-chosen words impacted their lives, with this collection of personal essays from more than 90 "ordinary Americans,", selected from thousands of submissions to a national contest. From the experience of a naval officer who comes to a major career decision in a Burger King to a woman's epiphany at a Zen Buddhist Monastery in Japan, these simple, touching stories highlight the moments when the right phrases or comments made a life-changing difference. Divided into thematic sections like "At a Crossroads," "Taking Chances," and "Letting Go," Thomas's new title may be a little Chicken Soup-esque, but this is no canned concentrate-this is genuine, home-cooked comfort food. Proceeds...

The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations (Oxford Dictionary of Quotations)

·

From Booklist
Samuel Johnson once observed that "Every quotation contributes something to the stability or enlargement of the language." And since every book of quotations certainly contributes to the enlargement of the reference collection, why add another? This is no ordinary book of quotations. As one would expect from the publishers of the Oxford English Dictionary, this work is thoroughly cross-referenced, packed with special features, and, most importantly for a collection of quotations, provides citations and context for each entry. Among the special features set off in boxes throughout the text are lists of epitaphs, catchphrases, borrowed titles, misquotations, opening lines, last words, and film lines and titles. The keyword index is exhaustive. Since its first edition, in 1941, the Oxford Dictionary of...

Book Description
Guaranteed to coax a smile from the grumpiest of grumps, FURRY LOGIC is a charming little book with a big heart and sly humor. Exquisitely detailed watercolor paintings depicting animals caught up in the joy and drudgery of life are paired with old adages given a new spin for our times. Tender thoughts such as "Smile first thing in the morning—get it over with," "If you don’t agree with me—it means you haven’t been listening," and "You’ll always be my best friend—you know too much" go a long way toward banishing the blahs and shaking off the blues. Designer and illustrator Jane Seabrook’s 40 universally appealing paintings of birds, bears, penguins, chipmunks, frogs, baboons, and more are rendered in delicate and biologically accurate detail using a tiny sable brush with a single hair...

A Continual Feast

Apr 2005
Hardcover
·

From Publishers Weekly
Hard-core fans of Karon's fictional Mitford will welcome her latest offering, a sequel of sorts to Patches of Godlight. Like Patches, this "commonplace book" collects favorite quotations of Karon's protagonist Father Tim on things quotidian and spiritual. Everything from John Wesley's "Direction for Singing" to witticisms by Lauren Bacall are here. Book lovers will delight in the musings about books, such as the Italian proverb "There is no worse robber than a bad book." There are reflections on aging, a few felicitous selections from Proverbs and some wise instructions about prayer. Father Tim (and Karon) are nothing if not well read: other sources of wisdom in this slender volume include Thomas Jefferson, George Herbert, Episcopal priest Barbara Brown Taylor, William Shakespeare, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Billy...

Bartlett's Familiar Quotations: 17th Edition
John Bartlett
0316084603
February 2003
Hardcover
·

From Publishers Weekly
This canonical reference work, originally published in 1855, soldiers on, seeking out memorable quotations in the midst of these dark ages of rhetoric. Since the last edition in 1992, the pickings have been slim; recent selections are weighted toward bon mots from pop cultural phenomena (Jerry Seinfeld, Larry Clark, J. K. Rowling), irritating catchphrases ("Show me the money!") and laughable attempts to evade rather than achieve clear expression ("It depends on what the meaning of the word 'is' is"). Fortunately there is still Bartlett's great trove of five millennia of timeless poetry, prose, oratory and epigrams, arranged chronologically and indexed by author and thematic keywords. Kingsley Amis, Mother Teresa and Katharine Graham all make their first appearance in this edition, while the entries for Edith...

Oxymoronica
Mardy Grothe

Mar 2004
Hardcover
·

From Publishers Weekly
Coining the titular word to describe quotations that contain seemingly self-contradictory elements, psychologist and amateur wordsmith Grothe (Never Let a Fool Kiss You or a Kiss Fool You) gathers hundreds of examples—ancient, modern and everything in between—of such sayings. From Confucius’s "Real knowledge is to know the extent of one’s own ignorance" to Yogi Berra’s "Nobody goes there anymore. It’s too crowded" to Adrienne Rich’s "Marriage is lonelier than solitude," these bon mots offer pithy insights and sometimes clever advice. Grothe’s 14 chapters group the quotations by theme; in "Sex, Love, and Romance," for example, Louise Colet advises readers to "Doubt the man who swears to his devotion," while in "Oxymoronic Insults (and a Few Compliments)," Henry James...

Giuliani. "I do the very best I know how—the very best I can; and mean to keep doing so until the end. If the end brings me out all right, what is said against me won't amount to anything. If the end brings me out wrong, ten angels swearing I was right would make no difference." —Abraham Lincoln "If opportunity doesn't knock, build a door." —Milton Berle "Political ability is the ability to foretell what is going to happen tomorrow, next week, next month, and next year. And to have the ability afterwards to explain why it didn't happen." —Winston Churchill "Never let the fear of striking out get...

Credo
William Sloane Coffin, James Carroll (Foreword)

December 2003
Hardcover

Book Review
This collection of inspiring credos by William Sloane Coffin melds Christian spirit with social justice. Coffin's credentials are impressive--he served as chaplain of Yale University and Williams College, and he is the inspiration for the character Rev. Sloan in the Doonesbury comic strip. He is also a lifelong social crusader and peace activist. In James Carroll's exquisite introduction he recalls a night in 1972 when he and Coffin and numerous other ministers were thrown in jail for trespassing at the U.S. Capitol (while protesting the war in Vietnam). It was Coffin's baritone voice that broke the jailhouse silence, singing out Handel's "Messiah" and comforting the frightened men of the cloth. In fact, Coffin, author of The Heart is a Little to the Left has never been afraid to speak or sing out his beliefs. "I like to...

It's Not Easy Being Green
Jim Henson

Sept 2005

·

From Publishers Weekly
More like a book of aphoristic verse than a commemorative volume, this book collects quotes from the late Henson, as well as his characters, family members, friends and collaborators. Cheryl Henson, Jim's daughter and a current director of the Jim Henson Company, notes that some of the material comes from previously unpublished letters and personal notebooks. Henson advocates a following of one's own rainbow-"I think if you study-if you learn too much of what others have done, you may tend to take the same direction as everybody else"-and taking one's own time in doing so. ("No time is wasted time," says Cantus Fraggle.) Though some thoughts border on treacly ("When I was young, my ambition was to be one of the people who made a difference in this world...It's a wonderful life and I love it"), most-especially...

More George W. Bushisms

From Publishers Weekly
Follow a man around with a tape recorder long enough and he will say ridiculous things. If he is George W. Bush, to judge by this collection of verbal gaffes, he will say many ridiculous things-some funny ("It's about past seven in the evening here so we're actually in different time lines";) some callow ("This foreign policy stuff is a little frustrating"); some mysterious ("We'll be a country where the fabrics are made up of groups and loving centers"); but most just embarrassing ("Of all states that understands local control of schools, Iowa is such a state"). Undoubtedly Bush struggles to "express himself with clarity and coherence," in the words of Garry Trudeau's foreword, but the tacit corollary-that he is a fool and unfit for the presidency-is not demonstrated here. While the characteristic "Bushisms" on...

"Men since the beginning of time have sought peace... all in turn have failed, leaving the only path to be by way of the crucible of war.... If we do not now devise some greater and more equitable system, Armageddon will be at our door," warned General Douglas MacArthur in his legendary 1945 radio address after the surrender of Japan. His and other great speeches of the past century by the likes of Eleanor Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, Princess Diana and others are reprinted (with some abridgment) in Words That Shook the World: 100 Years of Unforgettable Speeches and Events. Editor Richard Greene, a speech analyst and consultant, offers blow-by-blow analysis next to each paragraph of the speeches, explaining what it is about the rhythm and diction of the sentences that makes them so effective. The Yogi Book

Book Review
If the subtitle of this delicious collection of Yogi-isms has you scratching your head, it has done its job as stunningly as Berra used to do his behind the plate at Yankee Stadium. The Hall of Fame MVP catcher for the pinstriped dynasties of the late 1940s through the '50s and into the '60s, Berra was about as quick with his witticisms as he was with his bat and glove. But if his observations hit the heart of the plate, his grammar tended to pop out of left field, hence the creation of a unique mode of malapropism dubbed the Yogi-ism. To truly understand the title, you need to know that not every mot ascribed to Yogi actually emanated from his mouth--they only sounded like they should have. Thus, he really didn't say everything he said, which makes The Yogi Book absolutely necessary (see page 10).

From Booklist
This small book holds a treasure of thoughts with which every knitter can identify: the frustrations of ignoring gage, the thrill of a new project, the compulsion of yarn addiction aka SABLE (stash acquisition beyond life expectation). Pearl-McPhee is a lifelong knitter whose bona fides are secured with this story: when she asked her midwife how she'd know when to summon her, the midwife answered, "When you don't feel like knitting anymore." This small paperback, which fits easily in a knitting bag, contains about 300 short anecdotes, vignettes, and pieces of advice for knitters. For some of her musings, she adds lessons learned: "I will remember that no one has ever been killed or maimed by being adventurous with knitting." Many knitters will find it a relief to read a knitting book with no patterns they feel they must...
