Book Description
"I know of no religious writer more pertinent to our time."—T. S. Eliot, Introduction to Pensées Intended to prove that religion is not contrary to reason, Pascal's Pensées rank among the liveliest and most eloquent defenses of Christianity. Motivated by the seventeenth-century view of the supremacy of human reason, Pascal (1623–1662) had intended to write an ambitious apologia for Christianity in which he argued the inability of reason to address metaphysical problems. His untimely death prevented the work's completion, but the fragments published posthumously in 1670 as Pensées remain a vital part of religious and philosophical literature. W. F. Trotter translation. Introduction by T. S. Eliot.

Christianity for Modern Pagans: Pascal's Pensees
Peter Kreeft

October 1997
Paperback
·
|
Book Description
Peter Kreeft believes that Blaise Pascal is the first post-medieval apologist. No writer in history, claims Kreeft, is a more effective Christian apologist and evangelist to today's uprooted, confused, secularized pagans (inside and outside the Church) than Pascal. He was a brilliant man--a great scientist who did major work in physics and mathematics, as well as an inventor--whom Kreeft thinks was three centuries ahead of his time. His apologetics found in his Pensées are ideal for the modern, sophisticated skeptic. Kreeft has selected the parts of Pascal's Pensées which best respond to the needs of modern man, and offers his own comments on applying Pascal's wisdom to today's problems. Addressed to modern skeptics and unbelievers, as well as to modern Christians for apologetics and self-examination, Pascal... |

From AudioFile
After the death of French scientist/polemicist Blaise Pascal (1623-1662), his friends discovered among his papers a variety of jottings on religion. These they arranged and published as PENSÉES ("Thoughts"), which has come down to us as the liveliest, most eloquent apology of Christianity ever written. You wouldn't know it by the indifferent reading of William Sutherland. He reads with comprehension of individual lines and phrases, but with no sense of how they relate to one another. Book Description
For much of his life, Pascal (1623-62) worked on a magnum opus which was never published in the form the philosopher intended. Instead, Pascal left a mass of fragments, some of them meant as notes for the Apologie. These became known as the Pensees, and they occupy a crucial place in Western philosophy and religious writing. This translation is the only one based on the Pensees as Pascal left them. It includes the principal dossiers classified by Pascal, as well as the essential portion of his important Writings on Grace.

Against the Gods: The Remarkable Story of Risk

Book Review
With the stock market breaking records almost daily, leaving longtime market analysts shaking their heads and revising their forecasts, a study of the concept of risk seems quite timely. Peter Bernstein has written a comprehensive history of man's efforts to understand risk and probability, beginning with early gamblers in ancient Greece, continuing through the 17th-century French mathematicians Pascal and Fermat and up to modern chaos theory. Along the way he demonstrates that understanding risk underlies everything from game theory to bridge-building to winemaking.

The Physics of Chance

Book Description
This work offers a clear, much-needed introduction to the ideas of randomness that are central to modern physics. These are the concepts that have been instrumental in overthrowing the notion of the classical "clock-work" universe of earlier centuries. The author shows how the laws of probability and statistics were developed by such mathematicians as Fermat, Pascal, and Gauss, and how they received their first major application in physics in the kinetic theory of gases developed by Maxwell and Boltzmann. Here the use of statistics was necessary because the number of particles involved is too great for a deterministic calculation. But soon the mathematician and physicist Poincare demonstrated the unpredictability of certain systems containing only a small number of bodies, because of extreme sensitivity to... |

From Library Journal
Once in a while, a publication comes along that on first sight seems oddly out of place but on second viewing is admirably suited to its purpose. This little series of biographical summaries of the thoughts of 24 Western philosophers from Democritus to Derrida is admirable not only for its reasonable price but even more for the intelligence and clarity of the writing. Each volume has been prepared by an expert in the subject, and the result is a series of well-drawn and exceptionally useful pocket-size (4.5 x 7 inches) sketches of major figures in the history of Western thought. The level is such that no special background in philosophy is required to understand the concepts discussed. Each volume also contains a short bibliography, some of which refer to electronic journals or web sites. Most of the individuals... |

Blaise Pascal: Reasons of the Heart
Marvin R. O'Connell

January 1997
Textbook Paperback

From Library Journal
O'Connell (emeritus, history, Notre Dame) creates a context for understanding brilliant mathematician and mystic Blaise Pascal. The physical and intellectual environment of Pascal's 17th-century France come alive in this well-written work. Especially effective is O'Connell's analysis of the Jansenist controversy, in which Pascal was deeply involved and which profoundly influenced his thought. Although the book contains no footnotes, an eight-page bibliographic essay indicates that the author drew on an array of secondary sources as well as the standard published primary sources. Recommended for collections in religion and in French history.?Linda V. Carlisle, Southern Illinois Univ., EdwardsvilleCopyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc.
